I wouldn't take that chance. It depends on hard the rain in falling and how long the pack is exposed. Take the precaution by treating the material with a tent waterproofing spray.

Yes u can put it in the washing machine, at least that's how I keep my bag clean

Q: How many pounds will this bag hold without the straps tearing or breaking?

I can’t tell you exactly how many pounds, but I can say I stuffed it to the brim. I had my laptop, 2 ipads, my filled water bottle and lots of other stuff. It was so heavy you had to carry it on your back to balance it and not once did it even feel like the straps were giving in. My favorite thing is how flat it gets when its empty. I can’t recommend it enough.
