Ray Velasquez's Samba Sunset a Treasure
My girlfriend and I really got into the mood when we put on "Samba Sunset" while making caipirinhas the other night so I felt the urge to give props to this CD. As a hard bitten critic when it comes to DJ compilations, I have to say that this release by DJ Ray Velasquez is a real find. Given his DJ performances with the likes of Bebel Gilberto and Brazil Culture Minister Gilberto Gil, Velasquez hardly needs any introduction in terms of his credentials. This sensuous collage of Carioca-inspired lounge music should appeal to anyone who is down with sounds of Jazzanova, Kruder & Dorfmeister, Thievery Corporation, Gilles Peterson or other like DJs. Velasquez uses his trademark curatorial approach to seduce the listener with a floral introduction, gets a groove on with some delicate samba beats, and stabs you through the heart with a dreamy bossa remake of Duran Duran's "Save a Prayer" by Simon LeBon and Sylvio Anastacio. This rare and exclusive track alone is worth the price of admission, having previously been available on a Japanese only Starbuck's promotional CD. "Samba Sunset" is a hugely worthwhile set for those interested in absorbing a more elevated DJ experience.

Sophisticated
I must say, I had been following DJ Ray Velasquez since Kansas City, MO and spoke with him several times - he selections were several levels above the common ear could appreciate - most people fall into this category, unfortunately. He took his hunger for music that is calming and uplifting all at once to NYC - he moves this emotion throughout his music. This CD is a small example of this in the realm of bossa nova and latin downtempo. Aurora by Chari Chari illustrates the progression of this delicate journey from a unassuming introduction to the CD by Calm, sitting on the beach. Truly transporting. The rest of the CD is spoken for by the previous review. A fine selection by a fine DJ.
