Q: what is the distance that will activate it?

I was able to trigger it 6 inches from switch

Q: Will this work with a dimmer (installed before the light and after the dimmer)?

No. It won't work with dimmers.

Q: Does this have a built in timer to turn lights off after a period of time?

No, this is a pure motion sensor. One has to wave their hand to activate/deactivate the sensor. But is very sensitive and functions really well. There are other motion sensors which do turn off after a certain period and the time can be set.
