A great self-motivator
As a stroke survivor who's always looking for well researched information, inspirational stories, with a motivational attitude, this book addresses all these with factual information and a multitude of easy to understand excercises and techniques. Over the past 2 years I have read countless books, articles, and newsletters about strokes, neurological accidents, rehabilitation processes and how to get better fast. Dr. Balchin's book is honest no nonsense reading. He relates his experiences as a stroke survivor recounting the good and the bad. He does not try to sugar coat the process of regaining your life following a stroke. It is a never ending process and he makes it clear most cases will never regain 100% functionality. However, his book continually stresses the need to never quit trying because the true stroke survivor does everything in their power to continue to better their situation and make living in their new environment a blessing and not a curse. If you are someone looking for a self motivator with an endless supply of practical excercises and occupational techniques this is a book you need to have on your nightstand. If you have a loved one who has suffered a stroke and has lost their will to keep trying, buy this book read it and encourage them to follow Dr. Balchin's regimen. It's easy to understand and simple to begin. It has gotten my juices flowing once again. Best of luck!

Best rehab book ever!!!!
I can't say enough good things about this wonderful volume. I am four and a half years out from my brain injury (very similar to a stroke) and I feel like I have a new lifeline again. I have purchased many, many stroke books, from inspirational stories written by survivors, to books written for therapists. This book speaks to me. It is chock full of necessary information, but not so complicated that it's hard to understand. I have come a long way rehabbing myself, but I know there are gaps in my rehabilitation that I need to address. Even though I have gotten rid of my AFO, after four years, and can walk 1.1 miles, I still have problems with walking and almost no use of my left hand (I was left-handed). I mention this because I don't want anyone to get the idea it was a spontaneous recovery. I am thoroughly reading the manual and then I'm going to start at the very beginning and I can't wait!I feel that this book will be a mainstay for years to come and I consider it my new "rehab bible". Thank you so much to the author for taking on such a large project and bringing it to fruition so the rest of us can benefit from his experience.

The Only Stroke Survival Book You Will Need
I am very fortunate that my stroke happened 16 months ago, which means this book came out at the perfect time for me. It is unbelievable that prior to this publication there was nothing else which tackles recovery at home with so much detail, honesty and practical advice.Having been dealt a double stroke blow with both a blockage and a bleed I was in a pretty bad state after my stroke aged only 41. In retrospect I think the lack of help both in hospital and at home afterwards actually helped my determination to get mobile and independent as soon as I could. So I have been extremely lucky to recover as well as I have.Like many others I have trawled through information on the Internet and bought and read every stroke survival book going. Though there has been some comfort in this, I haven't been truly inspired to action until I read this book. Tom is very honest about the negative thought processes that we experience after a stroke, but unlike other writers then concentrates and how to deal with these and regain movement, fitness, confidence and strength...all those things which we are advised probably won't come back if we haven't progressed by a certain point. I would advise all stroke survivors to buy this book - even if you have recovered well there is a lot to be gained and learnt. The positivity I have taken from Tom's book has made me determined to overcome the residual issues I have been left with.Truly inspiring reading!
