Racial Dynamics in Early Twentieth-Century Austin, Texas
B**L
The best and most thorough book on the subject
Full of surprises and detail, this book documents a history of racism in Austin, Texas during the first half of the 20th Century. The book's one significant shortcoming is its failure to throughly explore the role of land-use law and gentrification in the oppression of Mexcian Americans and African Americans. As Austin has become in the 21st Century the only city of its size to see a reduction of the size of the African American population, and continues to create conditions that lead to higher infant and mother mortality rates in its black and brown residents, this book provides very timely background to an ongoing crisis.
