A visual treat of high quality maps, photos, and graphics
I started reading this #book (Journey: An Illustrated History of Travel) in Christmas vacation and finishing now. I would say that this is a must have reference book for all ages. It is a visual treat to look at the high quality images of rare maps, manuscripts, and photos. its ~420 pages cover the 5000 years of history of travel and important marks of human civilization. I especially liked how the map of the world came into being as we know it today and life stories of the explorers and travelers.

Not a typical coffee table book
Usually a book this size, a "coffee table" book is something you leaf through now and then and in-between "leafings" just gathers dust. But this one is a book I READ! cover to cover. Not only is the art and photography well done, the text is captivating and clear. This one ought to be included in high schools to facilitate the teaching of world history. It's a winner in all aspects and well worth having on any coffee table.

Fabulous Book for the Armchair Traveler
Fabulous Book for the Armchair Traveler. I love DK books. They are informative, visually stimulating and a pleasure to read. This particular edition has the added pedigree of being connected with the Smithsonian. You can travel, in this book, not only through territory but through time. You will be treated to the history and romance of travel. In The Ancient World section you’ll go back in time to the cradle of civilization and follow the Egyptians, go around Africa, meet the early Persians, the Greeks, the ancient Romans and learn their methods and reason for travel. The next section covers Trade and Conquest. The Vikings, the crusades, the Silk Road are all mentioned with wonderful illustrations. In the Age of Discovery there is a chapter on the circumnavigation of the globe and a section about the early missionaries. The Age of Empires, the Age of Steam. How the interior of the continents opened have some wonderful and actual photographs. The Golden Age of Travel touches on splendor at sea, claiming the poles, Zeppelin fever and includes some wonderful examples of Travel Posters. The Book ends with the Age of Flight and features writings and photos of terrestrial ventures as well as endeavors into outer space. This is a book that you can open to any page and find fascinating data or you can go from page one to the finish and take it all in. If I absolutely had to find a fault in this book it would be that it’s so heavy you really need to have it sitting in front of you on a desk or table as it would wear you out otherwise. This is a great item for gift giving but don’t forget to get yourself a copy too.

Interesting and informative
"Journey" is an illustrated book reviewing the history of travel. The book started with ancient civilizations (Minoan, Egypt, Polynesian, Persian, Greek, Asian, Roman, etc.) and discussed the reach of their trading and the technology they used (like the type of boat and how accurate their maps or traveler's tales were). Then we moved chronologically through history to learn about famous explorers, well-known journeys, and accounts of various travels. We learned about the rise of new technologies (like trains, bicycles, or airplanes), how they changed over time, and how they changed society. We also learned motives for travel (usually trade related), about popular trips like the Grand Tour or popular destinations like spas, and about things that developed to support travel (like highways and hotels). We learned about when a technology--like flight--first came about, but also why and when it became widespread or popular. There were pictures of things like reconstructed ancient boats, various models of cars or airplanes, travel posters, famous explorers, historical maps and maps of the route taken by the explorers, paintings of various events, and more. At the back of the book, there were brief biographies of famous explorers and travelers. After that were listings of various trips (like to the Wall of China or along the Livingston trail) and the sights you might see. Overall, I greatly enjoyed this interesting and informative book and would recommend it.I received an ebook review copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley.

Totalmente recomendado.

Excellent book.
Working my way through this book slowly after receiving it for Christmas. I have to say that it is a very nice book to have, it contains many illustrations as you would expect from a DK book but they are annotated with good information and the main written text is very informative for both young and older readers alike. I love history and am learning a lot from this. I can't recommend it enough.
