Heavy, beast, excellent!
The sheath is awesome. Heavy af. Cut 3/4 in plus branches.Razor back needs help.I bought one. Then bought one for a friend. So that's saying something.Baton, chop, cut, saw.... Need a file for saw. It's great, I love it, gifted a friend one.If I'd ever have to buy another I would. But this beast is a generational piece.Pairs well with my sp-1c

Great for the price
Overall, I love this blade. A bit of dispute between users as to whether it's 1075 or 1095 steel - but the main website states 1075. Definitely has some nice weight to it and the handle feels good. The only thing worth mentioning that I didn't like about the blade was the sawback isn't remotely sharp. Not that most people are buying it FOR that feature - it's worth noting. The sheath has a couple plusses and minuses that I hadn't read yet in the reviews. First off, the minuses: it's a left handed sheath. Meaning that if you wore it on your right hip, you'd draw it out with the blade edge facing upwards. If this were a fighting knife, that'd be fine - but as a chopper machete ??On the other hand, despite being Chinese made, the stitching looks pretty solid and it's got a loop for a belt as well as a snapping Molle-style strap to mount to a Molle pack.Overall though, a solid buy for 60 dollars.

Not a machete, but not a knife. Sort of a long hatchet, I guess.
I own a lot of machetes. Mostly Condor, but some Schrade.I prefer a Parang shape. A machete rarely needs a point. The exception is when gouging under vines to peel them bach from a tree trunk. The Ontario is an odd blade. It is small, but heavy. Too sluggish for slashing brush. More of a chopping tool. The blade is thick and heavy. It also has pointless sawtooth serations along the spine. Pointless because they are oriented in the wrong direction (you never want to push cut with a machete, unless what you are trying to sever are the tendons in your hand). The serations are not sharp, and they are so wide that it would very difficut to actually cut anything. They should have left the spine alone.Overall it is ok for cutting vines, and for chopping through briars if they are laying against a larger piece of wood. For an all around tool, it is not very useful. This is disappointing. I use my machetes a LOT during the summer. I have been looking for a smaller tool that can live on my belt every day. I frequently have to deal with briars, swamp rose, brush, and various parasitic vines. The Ontario blade can manage, with effort. However, I have smaller knives that work much better and are easier to carry. Heck, that cheapo Camillus Carnivore-X thing works better. I am still looking for the ideal mini-machete. My standard is the BucknBear, but that thing is far too pretty (and expensive) to carry!

The SP8 is legendary
I have wanted an SP8 for years. When Ontario went under I jumped and grabbed one and I am so glad I did. Heavy, well built and comfortable in the hand. I tuned the edge up and it's wicked sharp now. You won't regret getting one.

The limbing beast
I keep this attached to the side of my PTO chipper for cleaning up branches that might present feed issues. It works great and is built very stout. I have also used it as a hatchet/machete and with the thick blade and heavy hit it works for many chores in the brush or camping.

STOP WORRYING ABOUT THE NYLON SHEATH - IT'S THE GRIND THAT MAKES THIS KNIFE WHAT IT IS!!
Hi All. Listen, the sheath is just fine for what this is and the price. I actually like that it has two snap locations for total security. This is the key to this knife - it is ground ALMOST like an ax. The angle as far as I could measure it with my plastic angle angle guide is above 30 degrees. It did come absolutely shaving sharp and holds a decent edge. I would give it a 5 star but it is just thick behind the edge. This does give it an incredible level of versatility for chopping vs. cutting and the weight it great since it's a shortie. I decided to reprofile the bevel to get it a little thinner and slicier. Sorry but I don't have a result with it yet. Will try later.

True suvival machete
This survival tool is very similar to my Dad's World War II folding Air Crew 'bail-out" survival machete(in picture) .Although the SP8 is NOT a folder they share comparable quality, length tweight. Neither is a true 'swing wildly' jungle palm branches type machete.SP-8 is more of a do-all tool knife/hatchet/dig/pry device. The sawback IS NOT a 'notching blade' or a wood saw.Its design with wide kerf is for batoning which keeps baton stick from bouncing back or forth during blade batoning technique. Secondarily it serves to hack out of aluminum skin such as aircraft or thin boat skin. You use a hack/slice motion.I use mine to prune suckers off my apple trees (and daughter LOL!) and splitting kindling off logsI also take when on canoe trips or remote van camping or ATVing (to heavy for backpacking).Much more useful the axe/hatchet.If you want a true military grade toolFor most shtf situations. This is it!I find the sheath to be of great quality and mount options too

Awesome for splitting wood
I'll start by saying I'm just getting into Bushcraft and have no experience... The knife was sharp and obviously heavy duty. I tried chopping some trees & branches and it did fine but not great, then I carved some points on a few sticks that was also just ok. I started thinking it wasn't the best purchase because a saw, hatchet, and small knife would've been easier. I decided to sharpen it almost razor sharp, then spent a few hours splitting fire wood, and this is where it shines! After all that batoning, and even smashing some concrete by accident, I can actually still shave with this thing. I can't believe how great it held a sharp edge, and absolutely no sign that I hit concrete. I went from buyers remorse to feeling like this was one of my best purchases.

Hammer Teil

great depending on it usage
I was suprised when I opened this up - its quite heavy.there is significant feedback in the handle if you chop in the middle of the blade - it chops best when you use the blade close to the tip.handle fits my hands very well (Large sized glove) - came sharp enough to remove arm hair.its a very thick bevel, thicker than an axe. I'm going to reprofile it to a convex edge so it chops better.sheath is your standard form OKC - nylon/cordura. not fantastic...but not terrible either.

Good knife but...
I recieved the knife quickly. I finally had a chance to take it for walk in the woods. It worked great for quickly knocking down the branches and made walking through the thick brush easy. The edge on the knife was not perfect and after the first use mainly on cedar boughs did develop a small chip... there should be enough meat to fix it but I was surprised to see it chipped so easy. Over all a nice knife to get you through the thick stuff.
