Must have!
This is must have if you are planning to go to NY. I have not used this in NY just yet but it has helped tremendously with planning my trip. There are loads of "hidden gems" and local knowledge crammed in. I like how the book is laid out in each section for each area of NY. The thing I like the most is that there are loads of QR codes to take you to the websites for the most up to date prices and opening times.

Lonely Planet New York City – Ideal for Planning a Trip with Lots of Helpful Information & Tips
This Lonely Planet book comprehensively covers New York City and all its districts. The book is split into four sections – plan your trip, the guide, toolkit and storybook which is a change from the previous Lonely Planet structure. There are less recommendations about places to stay and eat / drink and more ideas for itineraries / background on the districts. For me this is preferable to the original format as it is ideal for finding inspiration for a trip as I prefer finding accommodation through the internet. The book measures 12.8cm x 19.7cm with a thickness of 1.9cm and has 336 pages so is full of information. The paper is quite thin, which I don’t love, as I feel like you could easily tear it, but I understand that this is to keep the weight down whilst travelling. As the book has a soft cover it is likely to become scuffed and battered over time particularly if you decide to carry it around in a rucksack, but personally I will be mainly using this book as a coffee table book to pre plan a trip. The book has plenty of inspiration for travelling around New York City, detailing each district comprehensively and allowing you to plan your trip and itinerary with expert recommendations. The book is illustrated with beautiful photographs, easy to understand diagrammatic maps and there is a clear contents page with an index making it easier to navigate the book – it certainly packs a good amount of information. It allows you to uncover experiences using local knowledge and still includes a few recommendations on where to stay, where to eat and drink with a heavier emphasis on what to see and do. There are recommendations if you have limited timeframes in specific areas and some brief information on transportation links as well.I will be using the book as more of a prompt to discover more through the internet to gain further details and for this use it is ideal. It is also worth mentioning that the text in the book is quite small. At the time of writing this book is £15.63, I think that this Lonely Planet format is quite good. The information in the book is good quality and up to date – I would recommend it if you are looking to explore New York City further.

Lonely Planet - New York City!
The Lonely Planet guide book of New York is well put together, I have never been to New York but I am planning a trip and this guide book is just perfect to get me started. The book is crammed full of information regarding your trip and it is broken down into sections that allow you to jump straight in anywhere, these sections include: Plan your trip, The neighbourhood guide including 11 neighbourhoods, your toolkit for the trip, storybook, pull out map and index.I like that the sections are colour coded allowing you to quickly reference the section that you are looking for easily, the information is informative and detailed, I like the tips and POI for the areas, I especially like the QR codes to check times and prices for certain things, I like the informative places to eat, shows, facts and the history write-ups.The book measures roughly 200mm x 130mm x 20mm thick, it has 336 pages and fits nicely inside your backpack, the map at the back can be torn out to make your backpack lighter if required.Overall, I found this guide to be very helpful and informative, it will certainly help me plan my trip away, it certainly does not cover everything in New York but it gives you a guide that allows you to get a good feel of the place and to not miss out on the main POI, It maybe best to refer to the book to plan your days and write your itinerary in a separate book as you go, great quality and each page offers a new experience, thank you.

Great guide, gorgeous photos, useful maps
This handy guide by Lonely Planet is a veritable treasure trove of information, and has clearly been assembled by locals and experts who know all the best tips for planning the perfect trip to the Big Apple. Extremely useful and a pleasure to read, five stars.Pros:- Comprehensive scope. The guide covers not only the basics, but provides in-depth chapters on all of the NYC boroughs, and highlights the unique appeal of each.- Ideas and itineraries. I found the recommended day trips really inspiring, there's really something for everyone based around various locations, themes, or activities.- Sensible layout. As expected from Lonely Planet, this guide is sensibly divided into chapters with colour-coded headings. The pages are easy to read at a glance, and the most important info is always clearly highlighted. And the photos are absolutely gorgeous.- Maps. Although they’ve long been dethroned by digital map apps, there is something reassuring about having a nice fold-out map of the city and the most popular touristy areas.

Loney Planet
TOTAL UNBRAUCHBAR !!!

Not worth buying.
We have used Lonely Planet guides for over 20 years. Through 2018, they all had the same helpful format: every site description included the name, address, web address, phone number, hours and days of opening, cost and map reference in book. Eateries and lodging in the vicinity were included in the same section. This 2024 version on New York City has NO information about location, hours, cost etc. NONE!!! To find the location of a museum, eatery or monument, you have to look for it on a map (which may not be on a nearby page) or go online. I researched "what happened to Lonely Planet" and discovered that new ownership and reduced staff omit the basic information that made the guides so valuable. The maps have streets in light grey tiny print which make it difficult to figure out the location of places. All in all a pretty useless book. Won't be buying any more "updated" Lonely Planets. Try Frommer's or other guides.
