Great book
This is another great Dan O'Brien book. It offers a lot of insight and understanding to the Great Plains and the Buffalo that once roamed them. He first caught my attention with his book Buffalo for the broken hearted true story that was both amazing and heartbreaking. But it definitely teaches that out of sacrifice can come great success

Definitive
This is a thin but important book written by the man who knows Bison best. . A definitive history of bison interlaced with a treatise on what it means to be a bison on the first place.Read this and add yourself to the customer list at Wild Idea. You will not regret either.

Fantastic read
Just finished this today. LOVED IT. Great historical account of the bison & you'll learn some things about early American history, Native American culture, and Great Plains ecology in the process. Another great book by Dan O'Brien.

Great Great Plains
There are few writers of the Great Plains who have the insight and grace and heart that Dan O'Brien displays on every page.

The real story of the American Bison
We think we know what happened to the American Bison (aka the buffalo): ran wild throughout the Great Plains in numbers we can't imagine, hunted by Native Americans, and decimated by white settlers. Now it's a good alternative to beef cattle when you want a good burger. But that's a sliver of the real story, and Dan O'Brien has the authority to tell it. He's done the research and lived the life, and because he is one of the best American writers working his craft today, he can tell the story as no one else could.Like a fine needle through deep tapestry, O'Brien threads us through what we think we know to the real truth. What impact on the buffalo did running them over cliffs have? What impact on the ecosystem did decimating buffalo populations have?If you've ever seen a buffalo in the (relative) wild, you've no doubt been struck by the wary wisdom it carries in its eyes and the confidence in its gait. Every time I see one, I'm awed and humbled. As my husband can attest, I can watch them for hours. There's a lot we can learn from them, and Dan O'Brien -- a buffalo rancher -- is the best interpreter we could ask for. This thin book (about a hundred pages) adds substantial weight to our understanding of this country's terrible history with a magnificent creature.

A Plain Love Story
Another astoundingly good book by Dan O'Brien. His latest "Great Plains Bison" journeys us through a couple hundred thousand years with a focus on the last 200 years, American Indians, US Calvary, personalities, ecosystems, even to GMOs. 100 pages of the story of our amazing bison. A great read as all of his books are. Conservationsists, historians, farmers, naturalists, and just plain ol' Americans will love this "bioptic". A history lesson, and a love story between Dan and the mosaic of the Great Plains.
