Sustrans' Traffic-Free Cycle Rides: 150 Great Days Out

A very useful guide
I travel long distances to ride traffic free routes and this is very useful guide to such rides in the UK. As others have said, some of the rides are quite short and some of the routes are not totally traffic free and so direct users along some generally quiet roads for short distances. I would also advise not relying on the book as the last word on Traffic free routes, or even those that Sustrans support, as for reasons that are not quite clear it misses some National cycle routes that I know are traffic free. Maybe the writer did not visit those?. There are also a great many other local authority or charity supported Traffic free routes of note in the UK that are not supported by Sustrans so they didn't make the book. I am still giving it 4 stars because a book like this needed to be written. The book is well laid out and I discovered three new traffic free rides that I was unaware of that I now intend to ride later this year.

Good comprehensive book
Good book but booklets featuring the areas of the country individually would be of more use. This one does rides from the tip of Scotland to Lands end. 95% I’ll never get to do. More local area booklets would be more useful

Nice ride, no start point coordinates, route length, time or parking guidance
Did first family ride from this book yesterday, which we enjoyed. It’s a pity that the starting position was very vague (just a road name was provided, which is several miles long), there’s no post code, map coordinates, gps, route length or approximate time for the ride. Also no parking guidance. I feel basic info is missing that would be very useful, especially in a book that’s geared towards family/easy rides.

I love the idea behind this book
I love the idea behind this book, and some of the rides listed made me aware of cycle routes that I hadn't know were there, so that is good. However there are a couple of issues.North West customers may wish to skip this book as it is poorly covered. All of the rides are short, and are A - B rather than circular. If you are doing this with a small family who are too young to reverse the route and ride the whole distance back then you are then stuck miles away from your car (I know the idea is use public transport, but that can be very hard with a loads of bikes and children). If you are an adult rider who can just reverse the route all well and good, but it's pretty boring seeing all the same stuff again. There are also no route instructions - just a wiggly line on a very vague map. The Manchester one in particular is a familiar route to me, and I know how many twists and poorly marked turns are on it. Someone who didn't know the area would struggle to follow that route. This puts me off putting my faith in the book as a route guide.

Very interesting and informative.
Well written and illustrated. In our retirement my husband and I have taken up cycling on recumbent trikes. We prefer to cycle in traffic free areas, hence our research, and the book was a great help.

A Useful Guide
This is a useful guide to lanes and tracks that are sufficiently surfaced for road bikes. The maps are basic but the routes are signed, so that is unlikely to be a problem. Good illustrations otherwise and useful detail about local facilities.

Great book, easy to understand and follow.
Very useful book. Covers sections a lot of sustrans NCN routes, with information on each overall route, places to stop and places to eat, also gives alternative suggestions to allow you to turn an out and back journey into a circular tour. Very well thought and set out book.

150 rides, spread across the nation...
This book Is great... inspirational... accurate... well written... but the fact that it's 150 rides across the whole nation gives you a clue about how many will be near you. Sure, we use this to help us plan mini breaks but if they write another that just deals with my region I'll buy that as well.
