A thoughtful book on how and why to build models.
A delightful book, and I am proud to post the first Amazon review.Model Thinking is a wonderfully readable purposefully non-technical introduction to modeling. By "models" he means both formal models and to some extent, "mental models." I think this book would be terrific for students who are bright and curious -- to encourage them to think about where in their life they are using and could even create models.Professor Larson avoids formal mathematical notion, noting that "many will say, 'not for me, I was no good at math!'" His examples are so well written that even an advanced reader will not miss the notation -- because Larson is making bigger and more philosophical points about the modeling process. Indeed many of the topics, show his decades of experience by covering topics that trip up advanced researchers and professional practitioners. These topics include several great sections and compelling examples of selection bias, and significant details about both the theory but also the psychology around creating successful queues.A thoughtful and engaging book!
