I Love DockCase, especially their drive enclosures!
I canāt remember when I first started using their docks but it may have been just after their Kickstarter? But I loved the original docks they had which had the look I loved in tech, simple but with surprises. When I finally hooked up to it and saw all the cool stuff they do I only use their docks now. When they started making 2.5ā SSD/HDD drive enclosures and NVME enclosures, those are the only enclosures I build now. The biggest reason is functionality. I had so many issues with the first NVME drive I built. I went through so many enclosures that seemed to be DOA. Then I broke down and spent a bit more for the Dockcase brand and it allowed me to troubleshoot the issue which was the laptop itself wasnāt putting out enough power by about .25 volts. You can see all sorts of data on the devices hooked into the dock. You can control screen orientation on the dockcase as well as power output in near realtime. This allows you to track power fluctuations in your usb connection. The older enclosures with the black glass and no PD connector required you to have a dock that could provide enough juice to supplement which I only know of their Dockcase Dock being able to do so, so far. Luckily, these new enclosures are designed with a PD connector so you have enough juice to run 4Tb. I believe the paperwork said up to 2Tb but I am running a Crucial 4Tb in all of the NVME enclosures and one 4Tb WD Black with no issue. If I can run an 8Tb (which I donāt see the big problem yet) I will update the review. There is a thermal monitor so you know what temp the drive is running at so you can try to avoid thermal throttling by maybe spacing out your upload download tasks or just making sure the enclosure gets enough air and that you have properly put in an adequate heatsink. It comes with all the tools you need in the box to open the enclosure and mount the drive securely. It has a strip of thermal tape in there but I like to use my own graphene and copper, thin, heatsink inside to mitigate thermal issues. So far it has done very well. The drives are fast with these enclosures. With the dockcase cables I had transfer speeds at the fastest Iāve experienced. See video. You can now track the upload/download speed with a more user-friendly display with larger icons. You can monitor temp and power usage in near realtime as pictured. A great little scatter-plot graph shows you what your internal drive environment is. The capacitor that gives you seconds of power loss protection is also helpful. While you would need to be faster under the original enclosure, these new ones with the PD connection means you have more time to properly unmount the drive to avoid drive errors and damage. The silicone sleeve is a great idea to get which depending on how you buy/direct or a special offer there may be a sleeve included or for a small extra fee. It will protect from jolts and drops and it keeps the enclosure from sliding around the desk or table.
