A very good informative book.
I loved this book about Victorian Glasgow, many of the descriptions matching my grandmother's family tales, going to Arran with trunks, chitteribites after swimming, all very familiar. Very well written too about what is social history of Glssgow.

A lovely window into Victorian Glasgow and the rise of the middle classes.
As a person that has lived in Glasgow all my life I do enjoyed reading about Victorian Glasgow. The characters were well defined and easy to relate to. The story was constantly moving forward in an easy fashion. The author wrote this in 1945 but it's so well written it has not aged. He is a delight to read. He paints pictures with his narative. I have it four stars as I felt it was just a tad too long. The last quarter did not hold my attention the same. Maybe it was just me ,but the first three quarters is so good so it did not make the book less of a delight.

A great read!
This book was a book club choice and I was a bit hesitant as it is a historical novel... But I loved it. So well written and interesting.. Unlike some other mind numbing Glasgow fiction. Am looking forward to reading the sequels.

Victorian west of Scotland
Beautifully written about the life and times of a Victorian family growing up in the world from humble beginnings. Will appeal to not just Scots!
