Mr Brog Briar Wood Block Pre Drilled Ready to Smoke Tobacco Pipe - Carve Your Own Outer Shape Design for The Perfect Pipe

First pipe I've made, only ever made 2 small spoons prior to this, If I can do it that ANYONE can with the right patience. It took my probably about 8-10 hours of work, but I move slow and carefully as this was my first time making a pipe and this is for a gift. Harder than many other woods to do entirely by hand, but certainly obtainable with pleasant results. I suggest drawing out and getting the measurements of the bowl you'd like to end with. Expect many times where hand cramps make you have to stop for the evening, as the burly briar wood only comes off in small flakes at a time. Worth all the blood sweat and tears out into it, as I feel it almost looks professional. I finished it off with sanding up to 500 grit and then lightly oiling with mineral oil, sit for 20 min then rub off excess. After 6 hours it should be hardened and protected and ready for use! Will buy another in the future for myself! Excellent gift idea for smokers or even as a mantel piece!My only criticism is a feel it is a bit more expensive than it should be, you can buy many varieties of professionally made briar pipes for around $30-40, however being able to make it yourself does add sentimental value.

Got this to carve/burn out and gift out. I'll probably buy another one to make for myself.100% better than blasting your money a $100 pipe made by someone else.

This was an awesome experience made easier with someone else doing the hard work. I was wanting a good briar pipe and this made it a nice cheap way to do it. No big tools needed. I used a Dremel, rasps and sandpaper. Stippling could have been better but that's on me. The bird's eye and grain in this wood is beautiful. I will purchase more in the future.

This was my first attempt at making a pipe. I had a general idea of what I wanted it to look like. I sketched a quick profile of the bowl shape I wanted. I did 75% of the work on a belt sander. Given the fact that it took so few tools, was fun as hell, and turned out decent, I'd say that this block was well worth it. There was a small imperfection in the wood and the grain was varied a little but it is still really nice in my opinion. The predrilled holes made it easy to make a functional pipe

I have purchased many hobby blocks and have made several of my own pipes. But, this hobby block is my favorite. It gave me the opportunity to make just the right shape that I enjoy. The holes meet up perfectly (which is not always the case with other suppliers), and the grain was beautiful.

This was a very fun project. I have never made a pipe before and it was nice to have a kit that was already started. I did it all with a Mora knife by hand. The briar is very difficult to carve, even with a shape knife. Still it is worth it for the experience and to have a custom pipe.

This is a fun block of briar to finish into a pipe that you dream up. Additionally, Mr. Brog customer service is great.I had purchased my pipe in August of 21, shaped it and enjoyed it for a while. One day I realized that the stem had a crack at the bend. It eventually failed after only 3 months of mild use. I had to set it aside and pack to move states. I finally found it after unpacking and tried to buy other stems on Amazon. None of them were the right size. So I reached out to Mr. Brog, 16 months after my initial purchase. They sent me out a new stem at no cost! I am quite happy with their customer service. I was about to toss out a pipe that I spent time creating, all for a stem, and I really didn't want to do that. I am once again enjoying this pipe... Thanks to Mr. Brog's customer service!

The hole comes through the side, not the bottom, so you end up getting a cherry that's offset and close to the stem, and you get a bunch of unburned tobacco on the far side of the bowl. It makes it burn a cone shaped hole through the tobacco, instead of spreading the cherry across the tobacco. It's really sad, because it's a super cool smoker, and it would be so much better if the hole was in the right place. I will try mudding it like a corncob pipe, but that will probably come out the first time I clean it.The other thing I don't like is that the stem has a chamber for a filter. It's no big deal to just leave the filter out while you smoke, but it makes getting a pipe cleaner down the stem and all the way into the bowl impossible. It means the pipe stays wet while you wait for it to cool off.On the up side, mine came with a brass ring on the stem that was not pictured, and that's nice. It also smokes really really cool with the thick walls that I made and I can taste the tobacco a lot better than I can with my other noob pipes.The bit is a little too oval shaped for easy clenching, but I dipped the end in some boiling water and put some teeth marks into it, and now its a custom fit that clenches great. It took about ten dips into the boiling water. Honestly, I'm not sure if the heat did anything at all, or if it was just the slow steady bite, but I tried it, and it worked.

Picked up this kit on a lark to give pipe making a try. It came out pretty good, the kit made it crazy easy to do. The wood was much nicer than I was expecting and it has some really nice flame to the burl. One side is a bit more plain but still has some nice birds-eye in it. I wish the brass ring wasn't glued on to start with though as it's a bit of a pain to try to shape and polish without damaging it.A+

The briar blank sent to me was in excellent condition, as were the pipe stem and the attached brass ring on the shank. In particular, the grain pattern and orientation of the blank were excellent. I was able to shape my first pipe in a day and am very satisfied with the result.My only (small) issue was that the carrier (Pitney Bowes, in this case) had crushed the shipping box in transit. Nothing was damaged, nor is the blank likely in any danger from that sort of thing, but the stem would be vulnerable to rough handling as it was inserted for shipping.In all, I will not hesitate to order again.
