An average handy householder can work this!
I got quotes from $2 to $4 per foot to repair cracks on my 400' asphalt driveway. I tried the rope crack sealers, and though they worked, it was going to be way too much hard work to fill hundreds of feet of cracks. So I went for the Hotbox 10 and two 50 lb boxes of crack sealer from the big box store (HD) @ $50 including shipping. BTW, awful photos and unclear instructions in the print version that came with the unit, much clearer in the online version. Took about four hours to remove the excellent steel-reinforced packaging and assemble.Took about half an hour to learn the machine after it reached 400 degree operating temperature. Although the trailing shoe sometimes caught on the output tube, I could always manage to free it. Now I've done about 1,200 feet of cracks on a 13% grade to the highest standard, using 90 lbs of sealer and 3 gallons of propane—and will always have the machine for future use or to lend out. I also striped the outer edge of the entire driveway, where it is weakest, and that is really helping hold it together. I'll probably do the edge to reinforce it pre-emptively every year from now on.I'd say the pre-heating torch is essential, especially in cooler weather, it really helps the filler to get into the cracks and seal to the surface properly. If you are at all handy—and reasonably fit, if your driveway is steep like mine—go for it!

Challenging, but works well
Had to repair dozens of large cracks in my parents’ 100 yard driveway. This machine is better than hiring someone and saves a ton of money if used more than once. It is a tough job though. But we’re satisfied.

Way better that melting sticks with 65 year old knees
This machine is wonderful and does a great job but there is a knack to using it. I'm getting better but still far from expert. I have one crack near the bottom edge of the driveway where because of the hill doesn't allow the shoe to lay level. The material runs out from under the shoe so the last 10 inches or so have become almost total patch material. Not the fault of the machine and no one can see this area anyway. The other thing I'm trying to figure out is why I leave a thin streamer moving between cracks even though it has the drip cover installed. The finished job looks worst the first day. In time the patch sort of self levels and turns from shiny black to grey. The material gets soft on a 95 degree day but doesn't stick to shoes and tires. It is so stretchy that I may never have to do the same crack again.
