No, it works with 4 AA batteries. And please do not use rechargeable batteries.

Can these locks be Rekeyed?

No, the deadbolt comes with its own exclusive physical keys.

Lithium or alkaline batteries???

Do not use Lithium batteries. I install locks on the college campus that I work at and lithium batteries will not last more than a few days. I asked our Schlage account rep and they absolutely say, “do not use lithium”. Besides this, I install batteries in about 450 student room doors once a year. Alkaline batteries work fine. Just don’t use cheap Chinese batteries, but a name brand.

Does he back plate have to be drilled into the door?

No, it does not. To expand on previous answers, the back plate bolts/screws to the front plate, just like the inside portion of a deadbolt lock attaches to the front/outside (key) side portion. This assumes that you are replacing an existing deadbolt set up in a door with a standard sized hole. As for setting codes. There is a "master code" that you set in order to set the other functions/features like access codes, auto locking, etc. Access codes cannot be set that have part of the master code in them. I.E. if you set your master code to 123456 you cannot set up an access code of say 1234.
