SO EASY TO CRITICIZE, BUT STILL MUCH TO ENJOY
When matters most serious arise in the Navy, the Judge Advocate General team of lawyers moves in to investigate. Well may they meet hostility if certain officials (some very high up) have something to hide. Such people would be unwise to try taking on Lieutenant Harmon Rabb. Never will he be intimidated as he doggedly closes in on the truth behind murders, suspicious deaths, sabotage and allegations of sexual harassment. Before each episode's final credits, all will be revealed. For those so inclined, this is an easy show to mock. All very glossy. So many cliches. Yet again, the archetype rugged all-American hero, his shirt often off, so much derring-do. Despite inevitable gung-ho sequences and trite flirty exchanges, there is in fact much here to applaud. The action is often exciting, very well staged. Cases frequently intrigue, their outcome sometimes a very real surprise. The fraternity among various branches of the forces (marines, pilots) comes over well. With varying success, some episodes venture off the beaten track. Possibility of UFOs? Truly a reincarnation? Opinions may differ over "The Prisoner" which goes all psychological. Worthy or contrived and confusing?Arguably Rabb is the main reason to watch. Although now a lawyer, he was once an awesome pilot. Still very much an action man, he will take death-defying risks to rescue those in danger, protect a ship's safety, test out supposedly state of the art equipment to ascertain whether safe.David James Elliott fits the part like a glove, here ably accompanied by Tracey Needham as spirited Lieutenant Meg Austin - she a computer wizard and not afraid to get herself dirty (as when undercover in a boot camp). In short, far more entertaining and thought-provoking than expected.

The DVD set was as described.
I had watched the later series of Jag but not the first series. This was a used DVD but was good quality. It arrived quickly and was as described. The sound was not quite as good as the sound on television but was perfectly acceptable.. I would recommend the seller.

Mildly diverting
I'd often seen bits of this series by accident on German TV, and it looked interesting, so I bought this first season, so that I would know the background from the start.I found that the delicious dark-haired dolly I'd seen on German TV had been preceded by a delicious blonde-haired dolly. The hero himself was dashing and handsome, indeed, EVERYONE was handsome, even the old guys. One gets the impression that JAG is entirely populated by amazingly good-looking people, with all their own teeth and possessed of nearly infallible judgement. The whole thing is so glossy and glamorous and immaculately tailored and pressed that I occasionally felt the need to don sunglasses to avoid being dazzled. Nevertheless, the attractive cast play their parts well. However, the problems lie with the whole premise of the thing. After an entertaining start, I thought it all became rather silly. Clearly "Perry Mason in uniform" would bore the butts off everyone in very short order, so ways had to be found to allow the handsome, dashing Lt. (later Lt. Cdr.) Rabb to go "off reservation", and to make off-the-cuff decisions that would probably lead to his being court-martialled and/or cashiered in the real world in very short order. And also to allow his delicious blonde computer-whiz dolly to strut her stuff, where ordinary computer mortals fail. At times, it seems more like "Top Gun" meets a combination of James Bond and Jason Bourne. We rarely see the inside of anything even vaguely resembling a courtroom. Part of the problem seems to be the US predilection for what the Germans call a "Happyend" that has to be delivered in one hour (minus adverts), and this necessarily cramps and requires excessive simplification for what could be quite promising story lines. It all ends with a cliff-hanging non-happy end, with the abovementioned delicious dark-haired dolly (or at least the same actress) dead and Lt. Cdr. Rabb in handcuffs, accused of her murder. So, we have to buy the next season to find out what happened. I guess that, since he went on for a further 9 seasons, he must have been innocent.Am I sufficiently interested to find out? I'm not sure. I guess it was this combination of handsome, capable characters, interesting locales and situations out of the ordinary (in the military), the background of real events in the news (Iraq and Desert Storm, and of course the legacy of Vietnam) and (usually) happy endings that kept the series going for so long, and even spawned a couple of other successes in the NCIS series. However, given the increasing sense of unreality as I progressed through the season, I don't think I'll be making it all the way to 10.

I love a hero
What can I say, I love a good hero. And Lieutenant Commander Harmon Rabb jr., lawyer and tomcat pilot, is a hero, always there to save the day, with nonchalance, humor and ready to rock. He is handsome, laid back and relaxed, sensible, courageous, funny and he is a dangerous man, when provoked. He is a mans man who can show feelings! And by his side a beautiful heroine. Forseeable, yes, sometimes a tiny little bit boring, maybe, but most of the time fun. And in the background the powerful resources of the American navy. I know in life there is nothing romantic about warfare, and a carrier with F 14 is going to war. But that is the good thing about fiction. Seeing this handsome hero saving another day in whatever situation he is placed, well you can forget about the realty, and that is what a good TV-series is all about now, isn't it?
