.com The producers of the Superman movies took a shot at revitalizing the myth of Santa Claus with this 1985 feature. Unfortunately, the results were much less compelling than the flagship Superman feature, despite a script by one of the latter's key writers (David Newman) and a story structure that is essentially a carbon copy of the Man of Steel's movie. The first half of Santa Claus: The Movie is a ponderous origins tale, in which we learn that Santa was actually a woodcutter saved from certain death by elves and taken to the North Pole to begin life as the chimney-dropping hero of children everywhere. The second half involves a world-class villain (John Lithgow) who recruits an outcast elf (Dudley Moore) in a scheme to sabotage old St. Nick. While it aims to become a Christmas classic in the hearts and minds of generations to come, the film never really engages an audience, partially because Santa himself is merely a supporting player in the drama. Jeannot Szwarc (Supergirl, Jaws II) directs with a disabling lack of vision, and the special effects are terrible for such an expensive production. Sorry, but it's coals in the stocking for this flick. --Tom Keogh

One of my all time favorites
It's Santa Claus! Believe what you want, it's the spirit of something good. It doesn't exist today. Barely for the children, too much hate and distrust and , well, you look around. I like it, I enjoy the old time thoughts, it's goofy, but the songs, actors, sets, reindeer,- i have it on dvd also and I play it as I doze off any time. I can relax.

Favorite
My all time favorite Christmas movie! It has been since I was a kid. It has a cute and fun story and it is genuine. The way Santa became who he is and Mrs. Claus is so sweet. The elves are fun. The story of the homeless boy and the rich girl helps us remember what Christmas is about, being kind to others and how Santa makes him feel loved too. I don’t love the part with the candy maker but it’s all part of the show :)

80s child
This movie was a classic for me when I was growing up. I had this on VHS as a home recording as a kid!! Haha This year I wanted some new Christmas movies and I was reminded of this one particularly! I’m so glad I found it on here. It came super fast and works great. The quality of the movie is not the best but it seems like it was because the 80’s wasn’t the best quality motion pictures ever made. Lol. However its quality is what I would expect from a movie from the 80’s. Also the case that the movie came in was super duper flimsy. The cover bends backwards!! But it was a brand new dvd in plastic and it works just fine for me.

My favorite Christmas Movie when I was a kid!
My husband had never seen or even heard of it. He's a bid John Lithgow fan so he agreed to watch it with me.Watching as an adult was different, of course, but it still loved it! My husband like it well enough, but it didn't induce a huge amount of nostalgia like it did for me. If you're a child of the 80's an have seen ot since then, it's a must watch; bonus if you have children of your own to watch with. The fact that it was on sale to rent for $1.99 was a plus.

My childhood
Okay. For me, I have watched this movie is some format or other, basically , since it came out.I have ALWYAS LOVED IT.As a Christian who, yes, still believes in the spirit of Santa Claus as well...If you're so... tight spirited that you can't let a little of the Spirit of Saint Nick HISTORICALLY into your celebration... well. *shrug* sorry. Check your dates, check the dates (in movie) on this.Yeah... This Saint Nick / Santa Claus appears as soon as the 14th century. That's 1300s for all you later-than-that-St.-Nicks. (From Santa Claus: The Movie, because, OF COURSE the quote didn't post right...)("well, that's only 700 years ago...") you popping out those 1300s shapeless underdresses, no underwear, and sideless surcoats tomorrow?! Didn't think sooo)Whatever. Don't care.I mean. I'm too tired for historical diatribes.AFAIK, This is one of the earliest, and even pre- ' Saint Nick ' movies out there.Also.At this time (1985). I BARELY knew there were people who were 'atheists'. I heard the word, had to ask what my dad what it meant. When he told me that atheists don't believe in God I asked 'why'.Not a Bible thumper, just an 8-year-old who didn't know why?Again. This movie? A year later. So. A.... admittedly young life-ling Christian who didn't understand athesim loving a Santa Claus movie? Might tell you something.

Forever Moore!!!

Ever Wondered How Santa Claus Came To Be?.........
This Classic 1985 Christmas film is a British/American Christmas production starring David Huddleston, Dudley Moore and John Lithgow. It is the last major fantasy film produced by the Paris-based father-and-son production team of Alexander and Ilya Salkind.-This Blue Ray Edition Presents The Film In 1080p High Definition Wide Screen, which is a major upgrade from it's previous transfers which were always quite poor. I couldn't believe the difference when I put it in my blue ray player! It's like watching a Brand New film. This magical film starts somewhere in the 14th century. Claus is a peasant woodcutter in his mid-50s who, with his wife Anya, delivers his gifts to the children of a local village every Christmas Eve. One night, Claus, Anya and their reindeer, Donner and Blitzen, are rescued from certain death in a terrible snow blizzard in the middle of the Winter forest, only to be magically transported to the vast "ice mountains, way up at the top of the world." Their expected arrival is heralded with the appearance of several elves, or as Claus's people call them in their legends....the Vendequm, led by the venerable and wise elf named Dooley. Soon, the future of Claus and his wife Anya is revealed to them, and it is explained that like the Vendequm (elves) they will live forever. Then on the very 1st Christmas Eve of Claus's new appointment the most ancient of the elves (played by burgess Meredith)slowly walks down the centre of the great Toy Tunnel, and the name "Santa Claus" is officially given in a sequence that will take your breath away.Centuries pass as the mythology of Santa is created, until we reach the 20th century (present time). This is where the PLOT of the film kicks in.The elf named PATCH (played by the famous Dudley More) sets off on a journey to New York City to prove to Santa Claus that he really is a great toy maker. He unfortunately falls into the company of a very Evil and Corrupt Toy Factory owner named B.Z.(played brilliantly by John Lithgow).Santa, desperate to find Patch and bring him back home to the North Pole comes to New York and stumbles across a 10 year old orphan boy named JOE living on the streets, who tags along with Santa over the next 2 Christmas Eves. On the side, the boy develops a relationship with the young niece of the EVIL Toy factory owner B.Z. and the plot thickens. The film has excellent special effects for its time (Pre-CGI)including Flying scenes on Santa's sleigh with all his reindeer, sky chases, and an excellent visual depiction of Santa's home at the North Pole.Is what I personally enjoy about the film, is it'sthe only Christmas Film made to date....that I know of that tells a story of the history of how Santa Clause came into being. This film has been one of my yearly Christmas traditions for the last 28 years.Based on the Nevelization,The elves in the film are portrayed as legendary beings known as the Vendequm. According to the Santa Claus: The Movie novelization written by science fiction/fantasy novelist Joan D. Vinge, the elves keep watch over all that happens in the world that borders their own magical realm. The Vendequm are described as being extremely fond of children since, after all, only children can see them, due to the innocence of their youth. The elves are fond of making things for children, and so they often journeyed out into the children's world, leaving their newly crafted toys where children would find them. According to the novel, with the passing of each new century, and as civilizations continued to rise and fall, it became more and more difficult and dangerous for the elves to venture too far out into the human world. Thus, the vast majority of the toys the elves made could not be given out, and were left to gather dust in their magnificent storeroom, the Toy Tunnel. The novel also describes how, on a certain long-winter's night, the oldest and wisest elf of all, the Ancient One, foresaw the arrival of a man whose love for children would be equal to that of the elves. The Ancient One believed that this man would be the one to whom the elves would grant full immortality, along with the ability to deliver the elves' gifts to children all over the world.Blue Ray Features:-Santa Claus-The making of the movie-Shooting the press Conference Scene-Deleted Scenes-Theatrical Trailers-1080p High Definition Presentation/16X9 2:35:1 aspect ratio-English 2.0 PCM Audio-English & German Subtitles
