Just One More Thing

I hope my life is one day summed up by a series of amusing anecdotes
As I was reading this it felt fun, but I thought it was a little disappointing for someone wanting to know more about Peter Falk in his own words. But then when I had finished it I realised that he'd managed to cover all the highlights of his life in a series of jokes and interesting stories, like you would hear them if you just sat and talked to the man for an evening.Like did you know Peter Falk once applied for a job with the secret service, but was turned down because of his past involvement with Tito's Yugoslavia? Or that he enjoyed drawing but didn't consider himself an artist because he could only draw something he was looking at?This book is a series of interesting and well told anecdotes. What's clever is that they capture a character, just like an actor would do in their performance, and they take a character everyone thinks they know through having watched endless repeats of the brilliant Columbo TV show, and uses that as a launch pad to show you who the real Peter Falk was. It doesn't tell the warts and all story, like say Cash by Johnny Cash, but it shows you more than you knew before about an interesting and brilliant life. It's definitely worth a read.

Just like the man himself
I think Coloumbo is the best of all the TV detectives, his style is unique, is manner is brilliant, his sense of humour is legendary, when you read this book, it is like Peter Falk is taking directly to you, he is telling his story, but right to you, there is no pretention, he seems like a nice reasonable guy and he is a good story teller. The book covers his early life as you would expect, and his ambition to become an actor, he is really funny when he tells a story about being considered for a part in a film, the producer looks at Falk and it obvious he has only one eye, looks at what he has to pay him for the part, and say's for this money I could get a guy with two eyes, he lost his eye as a boy, through disease. The book is a light read and enjoyable, tells you about his wardrobe especially his choice of raincoat for Columbo. He is the kind of guy you would like to meet not because he was a big star, but he seems like good company, a nice down to earth guy and I am sure that you dont come across many of those in Hollywood.

Great Paperback
I bought this for my partner because she is a huge Columbo fan. Having said that I love Peter Falk too and when I saw this inexpensive paperback version I grabbed it immediately. If you like autobiographies then this is for you!

Just Buy This Book
I love Columbo, so I bought this book. It's full of short, short chapters packed with anecdotes and tidbits of info that are all relayed in a very relaxed and informal style. As Peter says: "By now you should know what I like: short stories that can be read in ten minutes. Stories that supply a chuckle, that are designed for people like me, who pick up a book when they get into bed, read for 12 minutes, and doze off, hopefully with a smile on their lips". I really only know Peter Falk through Columbo and those John Cassavetes films that I've never seen, so it was nice to learn a little more about Peter Falk the Actor and his career. On the whole, it really is funny in a lot of places and it's punctuated with photos and several drawings by the man himself (he was a keen drawer). As I read, I couldn't help but conjour up that distinctive voice. There's not a great deal on Columbo the TV show, but enough to satisfy within the context of the book - afterall, he did do loads of other stuff too! Recommended.

Some interesting anecdotes. Not enough Columbo content. Missing pages. Overall: Good, not great.
I'm a big fan of Columbo and bought this expecting plenty of anecdotes about the show. (The cover and the title give you the impression that's what you'll be getting.) In reality, Columbo makes up no more than 15% of the book, but it's still an enjoyable read. However, I've deducted one star because this edition (which, I believe is a recent reprint of the 2008 paperback) is missing pages 191-206. I presume these will be available in earlier editions of the book, but these are changing hands for silly money, so I'm not sure I'd want to spend the extra to get an older copy to find out. Overall, It's still worth a read, and I don't think the missing pages would have covered anything particularly revelatory. So, if you're a hardcore Peter Falk/Columbo fan, this is still a worthwhile investment, just don't expect to get your socks blown off by it.

Columbo himself
I love Columbo and to read this book from the wonderful Peter Falk is a dream. I can hear his voice in my head as I read the words.

Just one more thing
Columbo is very entertaining and Peter Falk’s book is just as enjoyable. A great laugh out loud story of his life as he tells snippets of his journey as a child to a man.
