Oath and Honor: A Memoir and a Warning

Well written and helpful to to explain why.
I have been reading a lot of information about January 6 including the official report from the committee. And other professional and independent writers with true facts and figures. This book ties a lot of things together and is truly a great and informative read.My concern is and has been, if the American people can be deceived with the words of one man who has not provided any actual proof of his false statements, they are to me are just lies. Although through documented investigations and independent fact checking the statements/tweets are proven to be lies. Why are politicians and citizens following the pied piper, just because he says so? I stillremember the childhood lesson of "If someone told you to jump off a bridge, would you do it?" People attacked the US Capital on one man's words. (They jumped off the bridge)What happens if Mr. Trump looses the election in 2024? Will he be leading the pack (as a citizen) to attack the US Capital while under Secret Service protection? Our great nation has been dragged into Jr. High School politics and blind deception. It is up to us as individuals if we drink the Kool-Aid.I am an independent, I would prefer 2 different candidates for President.Thank you Liz Cheney for standing up for your country and not your political survival. You have just as much power as a US citizen with an honest voice and experience, then as a politician with the self serving members who witnessed January 6 and chose sides even while under attack. Shame on them.

The most important political book in a generation
It is exceedingly rare in our current political climate that a life-long member of the GOP would risk her political career (and possibility her and her family’s safety) to bring attention to the greatest danger of our time - coming from within her own party. This is an excellent first hand account of the events leading up to the Jan 6 attack on the Capitol and Trump’s craven attempt to derail the peaceful transfer of power - a cornerstone of our form of government. It also recounts her courageous efforts to bring Trump and his cohorts to account, gives credit to the brave officers who fought to protect the Capitol, and highlights the many Republicans who finally broke with Trump to give testimony proving his culpability. This is critical reading for anyone interested in understanding the enormous danger Trump and his MAGA die-hards pose to the republic. Provides fascinating details into the inner workings of congress and reveals the startling hypocrisy of some in Congress and the Trump administration who put party and power over country and the will of the American people.

Brilliantly Written and Eye-opening
I remember watching in horror what happened at the Capitol on Jan 6, 2021. I also watched the J6 Committee Hearings. This book gives you an insider look into what transpired before, during and after the hearings and why Liz Cheney decided to be a member of the hearings. I wasn’t a Liz Cheney fan, BUT I am now. She did the right thing for the right reasons knowing full well she would receive the wrath of Donald Trump and his supporters and lose her seat in the House. This is not a “fluffy make you feel good” book. However, it’s well written, to the point and very insightful.

Outstanding book - well written
After reading this book, Liz is my hero! She put her career on the line to expose what's really going on behind the scenes in the Republican (Trump) party. I admire her greatly for speaking out with integrity, honesty, and supporting the Constitution. Her (former) Republican colleagues could take a lesson! I hope every USA voter reads this book before election day 2024 - vital information about Donald Trump and the Congressmen and women who are fearful to speak out against his lying, out of fear of losing their own jobs. They do not put country first - they put themselves first, just like Trump does. I fear for all our lives if he is elected President of the USA again.

A well-written book about Election 2020, January 6th and the Constitution.
I am through the first third of “Oath and Honor” by Liz Cheney. I’m learning a great deal—about the events arising from Election 2020 and former President Trump’s claims that it was “stolen”—about our Constitution and system of government—and about various members of Congress, some of whom currently hold leadership positions.A lawyer and a former government official and Member of Congress, Ms. Cheney was an eye witness to and participant in many of the events she writes about, including most notably the counting of electoral votes and the ensuing riot at the capital. She tells her story succinctly with plain and clear prose that’s easy to read. Although the events she describes are highly dramatic, she does not over-dramatize them or engage in lurid descriptions. While she does not hesitate to tell us what she thinks and feels about those events and other participants, she does not engage in character assassination or self-aggrandizement. While she’s a conservative, she doesn’t get on a “hobby horse” about conservative issues. Her only concern, so far, is telling readers what happened and why it was, and continues to be, a threat to our Constitution, democracy, and freedoms. She uses research and facts and figures to support her arguments and a cool logic to debunk many of the myths and meritless claims put forth by election deniers.Along the way, she discusses the Constitution, some of its provisions, and why the founders included them. One of the subtler points she makes is that the structure of government established by the constitution—the separation of powers amongst three branches of government each checking and balancing the others—affords us more protection, perhaps, than the Bill of Rights. So far, this is a very good book, a must-read for anyone from either side of the aisle, hoping to gain an understanding of what happened during the election of 2020 and how our Constitution and government are meant to function. I have a feeling "Oath and Honor" will keep me up until the early hours of tomorrow morning.More later.UPDATE-I’ve just finished “Oath and Honor.” I found the latter 2/3rds as compelling as the first. That 2/3rds covers the aftermath of the January 6th attack and includes, among other things: Congressional reactions to the riot, including those of various Republicans initially condemning Trump but later supporting him; Trump's second impeachment and Senate trial; Ms. Cheney’s loss of her leadership position, and ultimately her congressional seat, for opposing Trump; and the Congressional investigation and hearings concerning January 6th.Ms. Cheney makes many points we need to listen to and be very concerned about. She also paints some very unflattering pictures of various members of Congress—pictures that call their fidelity to the Constitution, and even their honesty and sense of honor, into question. She also makes a compelling case that former President Trump engaged in a systematic attempt to subvert the election and hold on to power (i.e., steal the election) using a variety of illegal means, including deceit, fraud, threats, extortion, and incitements to riot and to do physical harm to others. I wrote above that she does not engage in character assassination, and she doesn’t. What she writes she proves with evidence.Bottom line: “Oath and Honor” shows us the vast differences between what we want our politicians to be and what some have become. Most importantly, it demonstrates, time and time again, how crucial belief in and fealty to the Constitution is, not just for our elected officials (who swear a solemn oath to support and defend it), but for every citizen (and those hoping to become citizens). It is, after all, the instrument that protects our freedom.

Excellent read. Very well written and informative. Tells just how in-depth the plan was to attempt to overturn the election process.

Country before Politics
This is an amazing book written by a strong and honorer le patriot. For the first time since 2016 I have hope for America.Honesty, professionalism and clarity are evident on every page. The time, energy and work that is evident in reading these pages is impressive. If I was an American I would be working for Liz Cheney. She is a shining light in a dark time. The message is clear and fact based. Donald Trump is a threat to America. He has already destroyed the Republican party. The man is a sociopath and a traitor.

Liz Cheney brings the facts without frills about the January 6th insurrection.
Liz Cheney, of course, suspected her political career was finished when she served as vice chair of the January 6 Select Committee. Simple: Wyoming is a deep red state. The book gives the reader the real story of what happened on that Wednesday and why. As a Republican and a voter for 60 years, I certainly recommend the book. It’s an eye opener for what’s happening today. It is a vivid warning as well. People need to pay attention.

A Fascinating Read
A fascinating insight into the unbelievable corruption of Trump. Very well written by an amazingly strong and incredibly hard-working lady. One of the tests I subconsciously apply to non-fiction is would I like to meet and spend time talking to the writer; Liz Cheney certainly passes this test.
