I have used this awl several times now in my bag/purse making and it indeed is very effective. There is no problem with it piercing through fabric should you need to but I have used it to pierce through layers of fabric and faux leather together to allow me to insert grommets and it certainly does its job. You of course will have to jiggle and push through to get the hole as wide as the stem of the awl. Seems to be very strong too as no movement or working loose in handle. Has a good handle for gripping. Just make sure hands are out of the way as I have stupidly not done so on one occasion and is very sharp...exactly what you need...just not in your finger :)

I bought this to plunge into the heart of the faithless fairy lover that jilted me, for which only the sharpest steel will do. I would have preferred a carved ebony handle with a pigeons blood ruby shaped into a skull, but that was probably a bit much to expect for the price. Anyway, the plastic handle is non slip and pretty grippy. Once I've cleaned the blood off, I'll be using it for sewing projects, making holes in leather etc.

Very handy when using sewing machine. Excellent for evening out material on hems etc.
