Suspiciously good
It's a tired debate (so tired that even the electronica boffins on the We Are the Music Makers website don't bother) but the music on this CD is so good that, nevertheless, one can't help but wonder: is this 2CD the work of Richard D. James? Jodey is, apparently a young scaffolder who does this in his spare time. Jodey - if you exist and if you are reading this, please don't take it as an insult because you are a genius, but a genius who sounds like, and uses track titles like, the Aphex Twin. There's a depth of musicality and innovation on this record that you just wouldn't get from a copyist. Richard D. James's label Rephlex (on which this album is released, coincidentally, or not) is known for its recondite and worthy electronic music releases, but "Steel Erector" and its also very recently released predecessor Plus 10 (also a double CD) are something else entirely.Think about it: Aphex Twin is expected to release something ahead of its time. That's a problem for a techno artist because techno music has an inherent association with technology - but technology has caught up. Listen to a download of Life's a Riot With Spy vs. Spy and you are, in effect, listening to 100% electronic music - 1s and 0s, same as Kraftwerk. Any sound is possible. So what to do if you're the world's most highly rated techno artist? John Coltrane only ever released jazz records, so why not release stylistically familiar acid techno music? Nothing wrong with that but because it's not "the next big thing", you could - maybe - choose to conceal your identity? Just a thought.Whoever made this it is a classic. There are no track titles on the CD inlay (some nice pictures of construction sites though) but according to JK's Facebook the running order of the tracks is as below and not as per the Amazon product info (not that it matters much either way):Disc 11.
