Dysfunctional and weird but coherent and interesting
This is seeking a niche of art-house weird and does it with an all star cast on good form, good script and nice production values. You can Concentrate on the plentiful good parts in this: I can see why this film has its fans. I appreciate it's intelligence and originality. The mini short story prequel, multiple star cameos, side trips into rural India, believeable quirks, charming touches, self mockery... it all adds up to a very nice cup of tea. I loved the conductor: Just one of many fine ways the director reminded us we were in India!I was disappointed the scene scouts had not done a better job. The actual Darjeeling railway was perhaps too complex, small, too tight in every way for a big film crew and logistically challenging. But what about other more scenic areas? And the other issue I struggled with was some of the gratuitous language and behaviour, even allowing for an attempt at stupidly dysfunctional. That said I came away entertained and impressed. Not many others in this genre, it will stand out in the annals of cinema and has a place in my DVD librbary/RECOMMENDED... er... yup, OK that's a yes then.

Promises much more than it delivers
I don't like Owen Wilson at the best of times - he has become typecast as vacuous and seems ideally qualified. It's a movie about 3 Americans who go to India - targeted, I suspect, at Americans who've never been to India and possibly never wish to. I could stop there. We have been to India several times (including to the elephant on the hill in Narlai which we had heard featured in it) so we watched it anyway, mainly because the synopsis suggested there would be lots of visits to fascinating Indian shrines, etc. There was very little of that - and there are so many more spectacular ones that they could have chosen than the one they did. Instead we had to sit through a lot of self-indulgent and implausible twaddle. And (spoiler alert) when they finally meet their mother at the "Monastery in the Himalayas" it's patently clear from the scenery it's not in the Himalayas at all. Sure enough: Wiki confirms it (along with everything else) was filmed in Rajasthan, near Udaipur. Were there any redeeming features? Although most of the Indian characters are portrayed as stereotypes, the young boy's funeral sequence was poignant and sensitively handled and seemed (I am not qualified to judge) reasonably authentic.By halfway through the movie we were ready to give up but resolved to hang on until they got to the elephant. Just our luck: it's the closing scene. Looking through our photos would have been a much better use time.

Missed Connection
I have enjoyed Wes Anderson's films before but sadly not this one all his films are what the mericans call 'left field' and quirky but this is one that escapes me.Sure the plot is believable and the locations good but too much of it grated especially Owen Wilson who i have never liked watching save for 'the Woody Allen Paris film, ditto Jason Schwartzman who makes me just want to give him a slap! also found the Hotel Chevailer short totally irrelevant also the sex scene with the train girl . The only bright spot was the acting of Adrian Brody always good to watch he was also superb in 'The Grand Budapest Hotel' and the under used Anjelica HoustonSorry Wes nice try !

Fun and original
Having seen majority of Wes Anderson's movies, some 2-3 times, this one only (?) 90% ... Starts so beautifully, and continues great while on the train, later a bit depressing and transitions between the scenes not so smooth. Not as much clarity as in The Grand Budapest Hotel. Still overall an enjoyable funny movie with a bit of emotional learning.

the humour is poor, do not waste your money or time
what I thought of it, you cannot print, if there is humour in it, it is not my kind of humour,3 brothers who's reason for getting together is the fact their mother did not come to their `dads funeral, for reasons unexplained, so met and travel across India on a train,Did somebody pay to have this win awards?

The Darjeeling Limited
'The Darjeeling Limited' is another kooky gem from Wes Anderson and if you know 'The Life Aquatic' or 'Royal Tenenbaums', then you'll know what to expect. The direction is very stylised but completely captivating. Owen Wilson is hilarious, as are Adrian Brody and Jason Schwartzman. The relationship between the brothers is very believable and the dialogue and their familiarity add real appeal to the overall story. There are many wonderful scenes and I found Brody's dry delivery of some lines only heightened the humour in them. The storyline is charming, about reconnecting with family and resolving past issues, and it meanders along at a gentle pace, but manages to hold you attention for the whole duration. There is also a short film at the start involving Schwartzman and Natalie Portman which is both touching and a serendipitous addition. I thoroughly enjoyed this film and would recommend it to all fans of Anderson's past work.Feel free to check out my blog which can be found on my profile page.

The Indian incredibles are on their way!
Quirky travelogue across India with a trio searching for adventure, romance and family reconciliation. On their way meantime dealing with tragedy and turmoil of life in India, the trio held together with their care and compassion for others - They continue though through more trials and tribulations, with madcap feuding of grievances between themselves. Amusing at times, the story ought to be credible but seems to challenge desires for another watch.

Very moving and beautiful to watch
Another great story of dysfunctional broken adults trapped in the past and nostalgia of childhood in search of closure and, self esteem. Beautiful movie and the art direction of Wes Andersen... as always, a joy to watch. The acting is great too!
