Well written.
I've never had so much fun playing my flute! The melodies lend themselves to foot tapping and I have to admit that I tend to play some of them faster than written, but why not, many are to be danced to and the beat can be felt. I also play them on my whistles when the neighbors are not home.

Amazing Collection, and suitable for recorder!
I don't play the flute, but ordered this in hopes it would be ok for soprano recorder. There are only a few tunes that have notes outside the recorder's range, so it's really a great choice for recorder players. The collection is just wonderful! This is fast becoming my favorite book of recorder music, the one I'll keep on hand. The mixture of tunes is stellar - including some Manx tunes, which are much more elusive in other Celtic collections. Walsh has provided beautiful "variations" for each tune, which allow one to play a tune for a somewhat longer period of time, without it sounding repetitive. Absolutely perfect for anyone who likes to play privately. The chord symbols also allow one to play these nicely on the piano, or to partner with a guitarist. hanks, Jessica Walsh, for this GREAT collection!

Ignore any Negative Reviews
This is the best book with CD I have ever bought. And I have an extensive collection. That I could immediately play all 44 tunes first time since I already know modern flute may bias my opinion a bit. Most of my book with Cd’s are for guitar, and granted, I simply can not sight read Guitar. It takes a lot of work for me. And that I finally found one for Celtic Flute has left me ecstatic. If you have ever played a woodwind other than flute, you need a Boehm system fingering chart for flute. It doesn’t matter if your prior instrument was Eflat or Bflat. The fingering will be almost identical in the mid octave as read on a standard treble clef staff. Whoever has said anything negative about this book/CD is OUT OF THEIR EVER LOVIN MIND ! Each of the 44 tunes on the CD is in the book. There is a very very nice sampling of pretty much anything Celtic I have ever heard. You will need to be able to play the more basic sharps and flats. Nothing difficult. The only transposing you might have to figure out is if your guitarist insists on actually playing in some really really unusual key. Make him use a Capo ! All of the flats and sharps are all notated as normal on a concert treble staff written as if you would play the melody on a piano, guitar, “C” recorder, fife, pennywhistle or flute. The Chord names are written above the appropriate notes of the chord changes. Nuff said. Buy this book, you will not regret it.I really can not figure out why anybody would say anything bad about this book/CD, unless they do not want a million people knowing the same tunes. There is a very nice surprise I will make you buy the book to find out. It has to do with selecting a flute. Do not go out and buy a flute before you read what Jessica has to say. And until after I have had a chance get what I need to make my modern flute sound Celtic.

Love the music, but not the fragrance on/in the book
I am enjoying this music very much, since picking up my flute again after a 35 year hiatus. I'm new to Celtic music, so no expert on that, but I can say I love the variety of songs from different regions and conveying different moods. I'm eager to get volume 2 now. However, something that almost ruined the experience for me was that the book arrived with a very marked perfume-y fragrance. I sealed it in a bag with baking soda for weeks, to no avail. I aired it in my garage for another couple weeks. It still reeked to the point of giving me a headache and sending my partner into sneezing fits. I was afraid if I exchanged it I'd have the same problem, as I assume it has something to do with how the books are being stored. So my ultimate solution was to cut the book open, scan in and reprint the pages (very time consuming), and recycle the original book. It was worth the effort! But I'd much rather have been able to play it straight off and skip the headaches and hassle.

Great book!
I love this. I play the tenor recorder rather than the flute and am pleased to find this a small step up in difficulty from Mel Bay's Celtic Tunes for the Recorder. I took my copies of MB'sCTftR, CMfF and The Clarke Tin Whistle book to FedEx/Kinko's and had them rebind the three together with a plastic spiral binder and heavy plastic covers on top and bottom for protection. They lay flat and having one 5/8 inch thick book is easier than three little books lying around. These melodies are beautiful. O'Carolan is well represented. Walsh's arrangements and variations are pretty and I enjoy that they're a bit longer than tunes in other books. I'm also a sucker for a tune in a minor key or with a minor progression. There are several in this collection.

Lovely!
This is some seriously nice flute music. Some is fairly easy to play and then some are more difficult, but I love the arrangements and the sound. Some of the pieces are in the keys of D and G, and thus playable on Penny Whistle or D Flute also. I do wish the CD had been made as an accompaniment CD, but that's minor. I especially love that Jessica put some info in the front of the book about the man who made her birchwood headjoint. He is shipping my walnut one this week!

Must buy for any flute player interested in Celtic music
This is an excellent collection of Celtic tunes and melodies for flute, fife or whistle. Well thought out including a nice description of each song. The companion CD should provide helpful insights into the music for both the beginner and seasoned player alike. The author also provides a careful review of the flutes she uses with a detailed description of her collection of individual instruments. There is also a good amount of additional resource information included.
