Beside to this book, I at the same time, half a year ago, also bought a copy of the "Mosby's Dictionary of Medicine, Nursing & Heath Professions". But while the Mosby's is mostly a lexicon explaining what's hiding in the actual words, and besides is showing to where the authorities now have reached, and are accepting, when it come to medicine. Opposite to this the "Alternative Medicine" besides also brings many further advices telling much of all of the known alternative medical methods which also now a days are being used for solving the actual medical problems.And in this book, based on the knowledge and experience from more than 400 persons, M.D. and Ph.D., we in many cases are told the names of doctors who have come with the actual advise. And in most of the cases we as proposals are getting a lot of different possibilities.My reason for buying this book is that through out history we again and again have seen how authorities for years have waited to start on using healing methods which persons have shown to be better than what until then had been used and thought. So therefore to be up to date much knowledge we will be missing if we only are owing books like the Mosby's.Looking back on history we for example 350 years ago had an English captain who on his ship always gave fruit to the seamen, and after having been around on all of the oceans returned home to England with all of his sailors still being alive, opposite to the normal only being 50 %. And then around 200 later a person in the English navy proved how necessary it was to get fruit while being out on the oceans, not yet knowing the C vitamin. But after this it took more than 40 years before the English navy started giving fruits. And for example we still are remembering that when Linus Pauling 40 years ago started talking about how much C vitamin helps for many things, how the medical firms then opposite to this even were telling us that we might die if we got too much C vitamin! Or how for example, at nearly the same time, Kilmer S. McCully, M.D., after some years were fired from Harvard Medical School, because having discovered the potential importance in Homocysteine, and thereby disproved much on what earlier had been "proved" by some colleges, and what was internationally thought.So for being up to date, and thereby having the possibility for getting the best doctor advises, or maybe controlling what being told from doctors, we need to read in books like "Alternative Medicine. The Definitive Guide".

YIKES!doctors have a government (police-state) enforced monopoly on health care. is it really so unreasonable to think that the same government (allegedly of the people, by the people, and FOR the PEOPLE) should set limits on the fees and profits of doctors/hospitals/drug companies? the FIRST argument that you will hear if you voice this idea is that qualified people won't go into medicine and won't become doctors if the government restricts the profit motive. that is equivalent to saying that the best predictor of whether someone will be a great healer is their level of greed. nothing could be more ludicrous. in fact, the only sensible opinion is exactly the opposite, ie, if we remove greed as a motivating factor (and the total lack of conscience that so frequently accompanies it), the only people that will want to become doctors are those that genuinely want to help their fellow humans. won't THOSE people actually become the most qualified doctors of all? i think yes. nurses are paid far less than doctors, yet there is no shortage of nursing students. and the answer to the high cost of medical school is for the government to pay the cost for any QUALIFIED applicant, in exchange for 4 years of practice wherever the gov't assigns them, thus bringing qualified doctors to underserved areas.concommitantly, all medical research should be conducted by independent scientists (academics) who are NOT employed by OR funded by big pharma, with the research all funded by the gov't. the benefits are twofold. first, we would get CURES instead of treatments. very recently, a vice-president of Glaxo had the audacity to blatantly state on MSNBC that their goal was to make cancer a "manageable condition," which is just double-talk for saying that they DON'T WANT to cure you, they want to make you an addict, hooked for the rest of your life on their outrageously overpriced patented dope, which only relieves the symptoms WITHOUT EVER curing the underlying condition. this is their stated goal, not just for cancer, but for ALL diseases and conditions. and not only Glaxo, but ALL of big pharma. stop and think like a big pharma CEO for just one minute, and you will realize this is the only paradigm that makes business sense. and not only are cures NOT researched, anyone outside the big pharma establishment who DOES find a cure is persecuted mercilessly. there are hundreds of historical examples for any doubters who care to learn the truth. second, when new cures or even new treatments are discovered, they will not be the "intellectual property" of a soulless corporation that will exploit them for the maximum profit, they will belong to EVERYONE, and drug manufacturors would be forced (by free-market competition) to sell them at a REASONABLE mark-up over actual cost of production, which is generally no more than a few cents per pill. in other words, all drugs would be available in low-cost generic form from the first day that they are approved.and finally, we must have a national health insurance program that puts an end to rich corporations PROFITING from the misfortune and suffering of others. medicare and medicaid currently provide healthcare more efficiently to those who qualify (a greater percent of each healthcare dollar goes directly to healthcare costs) compared to patients covered by the private insurance industry. but there must be big changes to the existing gov't plans; - specifically patients should bear the burden of filling out and submitting the paperwork to claim benefits for treatment, while providers would be PROHIBITED from billing the gov't directly, because this is the ONLY cost-effective way to police the system for fraud, which is currently rampant and taking a huge bite out of every healthcare dollar. at the same time, patients MUST have the FREEDOM to choose WHATEVER form of treatment they wish, and to receive it from whomever they wish, and NOT be limited by the AMA or FDA. it is the PATIENT'S well-being or very life that is on the line, and ultimately it is the PATIENT (taxpayer) who is paying for the treatment, so how can anyone justify denying treatment or payment because the therapy is not "approved" by big business or big gov't? my life; my money paying for it; MY CHOICE!the end result of these changes, taken together, would be that the real cost of health care for everyone would plummet to a fraction of the present corporate controlled and taxpayer subsidized abomination, while the quality of the healthcare dispensed and the proportion of people receiving it would substantially increase at the same time.that's MY 2¢.

I firmly believe in herbal medicine and this book is what ive been looking for.

Book is awesome but I bought used And I’m pretty sure there’s a drop dried blood on it so, use caution when buying used

I had the first edition of Alternative Medicine and felt it was great. But, too often recommended supplements did not give doses. As newer therapies and research developed, it became a bit behind the times. The second edition is outstanding and I see that supplements usually have recommended amounts. I love the additional therapies. There is so much information it takes time to put it all together but is surely worth that effort. The Internet is a great source of info but you never know who is a crackpot out to make money. The editors of Alternative Medicine have done their homework. They present a wide range of information to choose from but it appears to me that they have left out the crackpots. It is a solid resource of information that I can assimilate along with allopathic recommendations from my M.D. I give it five stars!
