Philip Glenister, Saksia Reeves, James Wilby, Clare Holman and Downton Abbey's Joanne Froggatt feature among an outstanding cast in this exceptional six-part drama set in the Channel Islands during World War II. Written by Stephen Mallatratt best known for his iconic staging of Susan Hill's The Woman in Black Island at War is set on the fictional St. Gregory but based on real events from the 1940s, and explores the moral conflict and hardship that became part of everyday life for the Islanders under occupation. The German invasion begins brutally with a bombing raid that kills many islanders before troops move in to occupy the towns and villages. Determined to maintain control, Oberst Baron von Rheingarten makes it clear to the islanders that all freedoms are restricted; a curfew is imposed, transport is limited to cycling, homes are requisitioned and Jews are forced to attempt to escape or conceal their identity. The islanders struggle to decipher right and wrong in this strange situation where both friend and foe must live side by side at times, quite literally...

Does not compare with 'enemy at the door'
I have the earlier series 'enemy at the door' which deals with similar theme, though set not in a fictitious setting but Guernsey. This 'remake' felt rushed and I did not enjoy it. I would recommend Enemy at the door for anyone wanting a more realistic portrayal of the occupation of the Channel Islands.

True to life story about Occupied Guernsey.
I watched this drama about when the Nazis occupied the Channel Islands on TV some years ago and I have never seen it repeated. Guernsey holds a special place in my heart. My mum, then age 10, along with her family, were amongst the last of the Islanders who evacuated to England just days before the Nazis invaded. The drama brings it home the hardship, sorrow, danger, difficulties and often frowned upon love affairs with the Germans of those who stayed during those five years before liberation. Although I think it was filmed in the Isle of Man, it didn’t affect the atmosphere of the drama. This I think was to protect the memories and feelings of the Islanders who had stayed.

Too short a series.
I have studied WWII and German supremacy and this series fell far short of the truth. I understand that the Germans protested that the series showed them in a bad light. I thought that it showed the Germans as humans which they never were. You will be so disappointed at the unfactural story that the series presented be it only a few of the six years of German occupation of the Channel Islands. Six years I hear you say. The Channel Islands were not liberated until some six months after the fall of Japan.Micky Finn

Interesting story
First of all, the cast is terrific. The acting is very good, specially Joanne Froggatt delivers as she always does. The sneaky way things change on the island are scary to see. Having read many books about the Second World War, I notice that in this story the dilemma's for islanders are very much like they were for people in occupied countries in Europe. It is easy to critisize the way it is depicted, but I always think I don't know how brave I would have been in such a situation.Buying this DVD is worth your while if you are interested in human behaviour in difficult times.

DVD……TV series…..
Fictional island, part of the Channel Islands under German Occupation in WW2.Deemed to be based on true stories from the Channel Islands. The depiction of the quandaries faced by the islanders, the abandonment by Churchill and the mainland, the unbelief of any Germans being allowed so close to GB, versus the reality.Humanity in war, humanity with loyalties, families, friends and family who are Jewish, part of their community, falling in love with the wrong person.Marriages already under strain, heightened by the circumstances.Black marketeers who prove invaluable in so many ways. The realisation that all is not what it seems or appears. The unnecessary brutality of German high ranking soldiers, the sensitivity unexpected, but humanised.Worth watching for these very human and humane issues.

What hapened to series 2
The video is excellent but when the title said "complete" I was under the impression that it would include series 2 also. This video is only the complete series 1. Highly recommended though

War comes in many guises ...
I really enjoyed this and, in fact, binge-watched it! Excellent portrayal of life under German Occupation. Not sure about the recommended viewing for 15 year olds. Perhaps it was given that rating when the film was made over ten years ago? I think it would be good to view it around the same time as 'Dunkirk' (released 2017) for the contrast. Plenty to compare-contrast here in terms of people's different experiences..
