The Dark Crystal: The Ultimate Visual History

Love this book - it gives so many details about the formulation of the story, the intricate designs that went into making all of the puppets, etc. A very interesting dissection of the film.

9.5 x 11+" book size of a great collection and story of The Dark Crystal Art/photos that details the journey told by Jim Henson's daughter among others, of Jim Henson's first moments of inspiration to create The Dark Crystal just as George Lucas was experiencing success with Star Wars in 1977, and then even had Henson create the Yoda puppet (though this book only mentions it without any picture of Yoda).Brian Froud's creature designs are here, and there are even cool mini book inserts attached (2 of them) in here relating to press materials and promotion of the film's inspiration. A sturdy, well made book and well written, telling the history of this film. No mention of the new puppet Age of Resistance series from Netflix since this is an earlier printing. Great book!

As a lifelong fan of all things Jim Henson Co., I was so very excited for to hear The Dark Crystal was getting the "Ultimate Visual History" treatment, knowing about all the love that Jim brought to this new direction for his dreams and work. Caseen and team have done an absolutely amazing job in capturing a depth of story, artwork, photos and never before seen pieces of Dark Crystal magic from cover to cover. Not only are all the inserted reproductions of notes, sketches, journal entries and production elements always a fun addition to these Visual History books, but seeing the sketches and process designs behind the characters made me have even more appreciation for this film. Caseen celebrates the labor of love that this rare gem of a film was to Jim and the depth of talent that went into bringing it to life. A HIGHLY recommended addition to any Jim Henson fan's collection!Thank you for all the heart and research you poured into this unique book Caseen!

This is an Incredible Book! It's beautifully put together, jam-packed with information trivia and other fun things including sketches of different things that were in the movie. Anyone involving any kind of artistry or writing or just being a fan of the movie will want this book, especially at this price, it is so so worth it!

For D.C. and tangible book fans out there this is a Thra-send; a spectacular encapsulation of everything Made in Thra.As a fan of The Dark Crystal since the mid 80s, this was a wonderful page-turner that combines information and imagery from various other publications, but also contains a ton of surprises of its own -- like, that Frodo stuntman and actor Kiran Shah was the stand-in for Jen.Any book collector out there familiar with other Insight Editions releases such as Labyrinth, Harry Potter, Fantastic Beasts..., et cetera will feel quite at home cracking open this tome -- with a familiar same size and feel. It combines the written word of Mr. Gaines, images from The Henson Group and Insight Editions' layout with recreations (of documents, pamphlets, notes, tickets...) scattered throughout like little treasures.The movie was an eye-opener on so many levels for me back during my wonder years, it's a such treat to revisit those nostalgic feelings again on a broader level and scope, with even more behind-the-scenes insight that makes the reader and viewer feel that much closer and at one with Mr. Henson and his amazing vision.I did enjoy the simpler, mock-up book image originally posted (attached), but this Froud schematic circle cover also makes a lot of sense.I only wish the book had a few pages and/or images of the Gelfling Ruins with the three-leaf motif found throughout the ruins and on Kira's outfit.A few images could've been larger, sharper -- out of the writer's control -- but overall the book by Mr. Gaines is a must-have compendium.

Dark Crystal. An all time favorite....especially as I became older and understood the magnitude of awesome this film is. I have spent the last 1hr 15min flipping through THE DARK CRYSTAL - ULTIMATE VISUAL HISTORY and I feel like a kid in a candy store!! Reproductions of actual production materials (like early sketches, memos from Jim Henson, set paperwork), incredible BTS images, concept-to-set art, fascinating bits from Brian Froud & Wendy Froud, and though I 've not actually begun reading it....the parts I have read, Caseen Gaines has just out done himself. Absolutely fantastical book!!!

What a great book! Very well put together, cool photos and artwork. A lot of extra little goodies throughout the book to give you in-depth details about the production of the movie. This was a good buy for the money.

Love all the copies of hand written notes and pictures from behind the scenes that you would never see on the DVD extras in days of old. Definite fan "need".

Un bel ouvrage, avec des photos sympas, des schémas, croquis, extraits de scénario et quelques petits extras collés dans les pages du livre. Ca permet de se replonger dans l'univers très particulier de ce film et c'est bien agréable. A quand un livre d'illustrations / making of avec les dessins de préparation et le façonnage des marionnettes ?
