Rembrandt's Universe: His Art, His Life, His World

The only reason we cannot give it 5*s is that the photographs of the paintings are less 'sharp' than in many other art books. This seems to be because the choice of paper - i.e. it needed to be more glossy. This decision has of course reduced the cost but has also lost that fabulous 'real' appearance in which other art books excel. That said, the book was inexpensive at ca£25 compared with a rival at over £100.

I ordered this for someone's birthday and they are pleased with it but commented that it's big-sized. I then ordered one for myself and it is"coffee-table" size and heavy. Beautifully presented and packed with wonderful pictures and text but it's not one to read in bed!Having re-looked at Simon Schama's book (also excellent reviews) maybe that one is more manageable to handle if one wants to read it at bedtime.This review may seem small-minded but for some it could be relevant.

Recently purchased, and enjoying dipping in and out. I think the quality of the illustrations are top notch. One thing though is that it is a big book, measuring 32cm in length and 25cm wide, so more for coffee table exploration. Definitely recommend for anyone with an interest in the great painter.

This book is awesome! Over 370 glossy pages detailing fully the life and art of Rembrandt. Superb quality images of Rembrandts' paintings, etchings and drawings are included within this book. Readers will explore all aspects of Rembrandt Van Rijn's life, therefore this is certainly a book for all Rembrandt fans.I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and I will continue to refer back to this item for the foreseeable future. Simply a must-have!

Since thhe book arrived i just cant put it down, i must be half way through it now and i think its one of the best books written on Rembrandt. The pictures are beautiful and will have you looking at a single page for hours! If you are asking yourself should you buy this book or not...BUY THIS BOOKS great for any art lover, would also make a great Christmas present for anyone who loves art in the family.

A beautiful and informative book and something of a bargain. All you could want to know about the great man with a huge collection of his paintings and the quite extraordinary etchings. My wife's only complaint is that it's too big to read in bed!

THIS IS A COMPRENSIVE STUDY ON REMBRANDT BUT THE ONE THING IT LACKS ARE CLOSE UP DETAILS FOR THE PORTRAITS SO THIS WAS A DISAPPOINTMENT

What a spectacular book! Not only does it contain all known Rembrandt paintings, drawings & etchings, but the historical and technical background are incredibly rich, resulting in an entirely different appreciation of Rembrandt's work.
