David Gilmour: Live at Pompeii

AMAZING!!!! David Gilmour+Ancient Pompeii Arena= One of the Best Concert Films EVER! I was lucky enough to see Pink Floyd on their "73 DSOTM Tour tickets were a whopping $9.00!!! As you can see now it's pretty cost prohibitive now to see a 3rd rate band now, much less one the caliber of PF (among others). But with 50" HDTV and a good surround sound system it's as close as you can get without actually being there, David is one (if not the)of the best Guitarist's still making great music today. Top notch performance and band! Even Chuck Leavell on Keys and vocals. Great show great filming, I actually feel like I was there!!! I hope you can keep us entertained for years to come. no doubt one of the best concert films out there. KEEP ROCKING DAVE!!! Roger WHO?????

Beautiful recording of David Gilmour. He is my favorite guitarist so I was keen to like this show. No problem there! There's a nice mix of classics and solo work here. The "Rattle that Lock" songs are well done as are the other stuff from Gilmour's solo work. And the Floyd songs are very nicely done. Direction/camera work is excellent giving us great footage. The band with David are top flight, with the backing vocals being extra special. Gilmour's guitar is spectacular and he plays one mean steel guitar. Now he played a great steel when I saw Floyd (minus Waters) but here he is truly excellent. This is a great representation of David Gilmour's music. The tribute song to Richard Wright is one of my favorite songs on this first disc. Great music here!

This DVD performance is fantastic in every way. But....... I may have received a defective copy.There are very little bass frequencies being sent to the sub woofer in 5.1 dolby or 5.1 dts settings. The 2 channel stereo mix has all the bass you can ask for, but the 5.1 settings have almost no bass signal. I have a very nice sound system and all my other concert dvd's are not lacking in the bass signal to the sub woofer.Is anyone else experiencing this?

Meh... interesting content. Bad audio quality, bad cinematography. Find David Gilmour, to be quite an excellent musician. However, this wasn't one of his better performances. I cut him some slack. He must be in his 70's in this video. Lacks accuracy and vigor of the younger David Gilmour. Original 'Live at Pompeii' still one of my most favorite concert DVDs. This one, just fell short of expectations.

Yeah, it's an awesome Video recording, but the format is terrible, I was expecting a High Quality Video, but I got a very small format that looks all pixelated when played on full screen or even a medium T.V. (850*480p)Buy this if you don't mind video quality, I'd buy the Bluray version but I don't own a Bluray player....Really dissapointed at this version and all the good reviews that rate Gilmours job ont he guitar instead of the product being offered here...

David Gilmour has yet to lose "it". While I would have liked more "Floyd" tunes, I can't fault the performance from him, or his band. The light show is typically spectacular, as is the sound quality. Everything you have come to expect from a Pink Floyd member.

Be it David or Roger. you always expect high quality musicianship, audio, and visuals with the former Pink Floyd maestros. This dvd is stunning on all 3 counts. The visuals at times go from good to great to spectacular! This is easily a 5 star concert. Excellent!!!

Der alte Mann (David Gilmour, beim Auftritt 2016 72 Jahre) kann es noch! Und im Gegensatz zu seinem kongenialen Partner und Gegenspieler aus Pink Floyd Zeiten, Roger Waters, geht er nicht mit zornesrotem Kopf auf Welttournee-Mission gegen alles Böse. Bei Gilmour steht die Musik im Vordergrund, keine politischen Botschaften. Schade, dass es zwischen ihm und Waters keine Symbiose mehr gibt; aber selbst dann wäre zu befürchten, dass die Trumps, Mays, Merkels und Kims dieser Welt auch nicht zuhören….Die Rückkehr von Gilmour nach Pompeii ist mit viel mystischer Vergangenheit behaftet, wurde hier doch 1971 der legendäre Musikfilm „Pink Floyd Live at Pompeii“ gedreht. Allerdings mit heutzutage archaisch anmutender Technik und völlig ohne Publikum. Am Ende der aktuellen Doppel-DVD gibt es einen kleinen Film, der sich mit dieser Vergangenheit und einer Fotoausstellung befasst. Eine Ausstellung mit Fotos aus dem Film befindet sich nämlich in den Katakomben des Amphitheaters, welches damals (1971) wie heute (2016) als Aufführungsort diente. Auf einer Führung durch diese und in Interviews mit Zeitzeugen werden David und seine Frau Polly Samson in die Vergangenheit entführt bis schliesslich David auch noch die Ehrenbürger-Urkunde von Pompeji verliehen bekommt („David, it is your town“). Doch zurück zum Konzert im Juli 2016 (an 2 Tagen).Das aktuelle Soloalbum von Gilmour zur Tournee „Rattle That Lock“ ist eher durchschnittlich und ruhig, hat aber mehr Herzblut und Authentizität als jenes von Waters, welches ich an anderer Stelle besprochen habe. Aber bei der Live-Darbietung bekommt es nochmal mehr Leben, vergleichbar dem ähnlichen Effekt des damaligen Albums „On an Island“ beim legendären Danzig-Konzert im Aug. 2006, damals noch mit dem inzwischen verstorbenen PF-Keyboarder Rick Wright. Guy Pratt am Bass und der ewig lachende Steve DiStanislao an den Drums gehören seit damals zum festen Stamm der Gilmour Tourband. Andere, wie der zweite Gitarrist und die Keyboarder oder Background-Sänger(innen) wechseln auf den verschiedenen Tour-Etappen. Aber wie immer ist das Programm gut einstudiert und wird in erstklassiger Qualität dargeboten, natürlich mit dem „Meister“ an der Gitarre. Über seine immer noch brillante Performance braucht man kein Wort zu verlieren. Bekanntermassen ist Gilmour kein Show-Mensch, aber seine Arbeit an den verschiedenen Gitarren ist einfach Weltklasse und wird vom Publikum auch entsprechend gewürdigt, welches übrigens nur den Innenraum des Amphitheaters bevölkern darf, die Ränge bleiben leer. Wahrscheinlich aus Sicherheitsgründen, weil das Bauwerk ja sehr alt ist.Dass man als alter Pink Floyd Fan nicht so recht in „Konzertstimmung“ kommt, trotz super Ton und HD-Bild, liegt an der jugendlichen „Lady Gaga Umschnitt-Technik“, die meint, alle 2 sec eine neue Perspektive liefern zu müssen. Das ist schlichtweg Müll und nur der Tatsache zu verdanken, dass die heutigen Kids anscheinend ständig neue Reize brauchen. Diese braucht aber ein Pink Floyd oder David Gilmour Fan der alten Garde NICHT. Ich habe diesen Verriss schon für das Led Zeppelin-Konzert in der O2-Arena London angebracht, dort aber noch 5 Punkte für das Produkt vergeben. Das mache ich nun nicht mehr. Die Umschnitt-Techniker der Generation 20-30 müssen einfach mal lernen, dass wir Alten das nicht wollen; geht das mal in die Produzentenhirne hinein? Daher hilft hier nur – trotz satter 5 Sterne für das Konzert musikalisch – ein Punktabzug. Also nur 4 Sterne und klare und knallharte Kritik an dieser unsinnigen Schneidetechnik, die einem nach einer Weile Kopfschmerzen verursacht. Kein Wunder, dass sich Jugendliche heutzutage auf nichts mehr wirklich konzentrieren können. Ich denke, man hört meine abgrundtiefe Ablehnung dieses Mülls heraus….Das Konzert an sich ist eine bunte Mischung aus altem Floyd-Material und den letzten beiden Soloalben von Gilmour. Im Kontext passt das gut, wird manchmal von ihm auch noch kommentiert: „This was a Song from Rick Wright, now we are going to perform a Song ABOUT Rick from myself and Polly“. Die Musik ist schön, teilweise episch, als CD ist das Ganze sehr entspannend, bei der DVD stört der hektische Schnitt. Der letzte reguläre Song „Run Like Hell“ von „The Wall“ wird durch fulminante Pyrotechnik beschlossen, als Zugabe gibt es dann noch „Time“ und das obligatorische „Comfortably Numb“.Gesamtbewertung wie oben ausgeführt und begründet: 4 Sterne.Joe

Looks really stunning on my TV, sound quality is great too. The concert moves along swiftly mixing old and new songs, and there is real passion in the performance.. Nice tribute to Richard Wright in there too. Very happy with this item (less so with Amazons slow delivery but wont mark the item down for that),

Been a Floyd fan with almost all their albums collected on venal I feel this one is a must. IM not over keen on some of the early stuff but my first DVD or video as it was earlier. Was Live at Pompeii and going full circle Back at Pompeii again... It's great to see Dave Gilmour of course but sad the band is no longer as it was when the others were alive. I can only imagine the feeling of playing such a gig in such a poiniant venue. Of course the music all floyd fans know inside out. But for me and many others that's the attraction.A great DVD to add to your collection....

All I can say is WOW, this is mesmerising, makes me glad I spent the extra for a great sound system .... he just gets better and so does the technology to interpret his works... sad he is the last remnant of an epoch never again to be revisited..... Shine on David Gilmour

I've been a PF fan for as long as I can remember, viewed so many performances throughout time of them, then solo careers mainly David Gilmour, have managed to educate one of my (3) sons musically and showed him some of the songs on YouTube, he was as hooked as I am. This DVD is simply superb and won't disappoint, all of the musicians are incredible, the camaraderie between them is excellent, so much talent on one stage. I hope you enjoy this as much as we have 👌
