Confusing but spectacular
This third 'Rebuild of Evangelion' film sees the story go in a different direction to that of the original series as the action skips forward fifteen years after the events of the previous film with an unaged Shinji waking up to a world drastically changed by his actions. This is a very entertaining film that has an interesting plot that should also surprise fans of the original series as much as people new to the franchise. Despite this, I do feel that some familiarity with the wider franchise’s lore helps understand some of what is going on because, as with the previous films, some of the core concepts and events get relatively little explanation that could confuse those new to Evangelion. Mira could still do with a little more development as well as she still seems like little more than a battle hungry thrill seeker. On the plus side, I did like the Rei in this film as it did feel like she was slowly developing into a full character by the end.The animation of this third film remains as great as the rest of the Rebuild series with some great fights and beautiful scenery. The designs of the various Eva, and other machines, in the film were also good, particularly the AAA Wunder and the scythe-wielding Unit 09.The DVD includes both the English and Japanese audio tracks, as well as a number of special features that I haven’t got around to watch yet. This is probably my favourite of the 'Rebuild' series that I have watched so far and is well worth around four and a half stars.

Nice Visuals, Shame about the Story.
Let's start with the positives:Giant (quasi biological for no apparant reason) robots. Check.Guns explosions and bizzaro geometric enemies. Check. All the main characters still recognisable. Check.Great animation and visuals. Check. It's worth buying just for those, and since you've bought 1.11 and 2.22, you've pretty much got a gun to your head anyway.Semi spoilers warning. The negatives. The film generally gave me a feeling of "argh" the whole way through. Okay. Shinji is still a whiny ball of self-doubting daddy/mummy issues wrapped in a veneer of socio-sexual ineptitude. But then, he has been in a coma for 14 years, and his lack of character development can be forgiven. But the others..? Asuka - still a completely 2 dimensional bitch from hell, and the other one with the glasses, has actually regressed, possessing even less of anything resembling character than in 2.22. Rei may as well be cut directly from cardboard and towed around on a trolley. Argh. The new guy from the moon..? Plot exposition robot and nothing else. Shinji's dad has got some new sunglasses. All these things could be forgivable, it's a giant robot anime movie afterall, if there was an engrossing story to hang it all on. Hell, I'd settle even for simply an approachable, understandable narrative. My son was watching next to me for some of the movie, and was asking me questions about what was going on, each time I just had to shrug and tell him I had no idea. Stuff. It feels like the dvd should come packaged with a 1000-page catch-you-up manual containing every fanblog post on the net.Too exclusive full stop. No logic to anything, from the technology displayed to the reactions of characters involved. No real human connections either between the onscreen characters, beyond a few uncomfortable, desperate moments with Shinji and the guy from the moon, or between the viewer and the characters portrayed. Mainly because there are no characters in the movie, just generalized tropes condensed down to the point of interchangebility.A giant filler of a movie.

Still room for development
I've waited 24 hours after viewing to write this review. Usually I write them straight after. Why the delay? I had to decide what I really thought. I really liked the original series, platinum version, its mix of existential angst, moral philosophy and mecha mayhem were fantastic. This rebuild has been good in parts and dreadful in equal measure. The character rewrites and uneven tone threw me. Fourteen years after forcing his son to bring about the third impact Shinji awakens to a changed world. It's an uneven film, fans of the franchise will love the lore and mystical elements present in the first 40 minutes, the ending feels like fan service and mecha mayhem thrown in to keep things moving. Shinji self-hatred still stains the development, he's still exceptionally whiny, but at least it's short lived. The plot asks more questions which the final part will find hard to answer if someone doesn't reign in the messy exposition and choose a direction for the film to follow. I liked it, but it won't be everyone's idea of what Evangelion should be.

OUT OF PLACE BOX ART
Love the rebuilds. But this box art is just terrible, it doesnt match the box art for the first two movies and so is wildly out of place. I dont know how they deemed this box art acceptable.

Good film. Mind bending. Not much else.
This is going to be a review of the case and extra content because I assume that, if you are thinking about buying this show, you've already seen it and have decided you liked it enough to purchase the physical copy. The case is nothing special. Holds the discs and has nice artwork, can't ask for much else.It does have some extra feature but nothing that is interesting. It's going cheap at the moment so worth getting it you like the film.
