The Last House on Needless Street

The narrators keep you wondering what is going on, who is reliable and telling the truth. And the end wraps it up neatly. Creepy in all the best ways.

When I started The Last House on Needless Street, I honestly didn’t know what to think. My first reaction was basically, what on earth is this? The writing felt strange, disjointed, and I had a hard time following what was going on. I almost gave up early on because nothing made sense and it all felt weird for the sake of being weird. But I decided to push through, and I’m glad I did. Somewhere along the way, I found myself getting intrigued. I started thinking, okay, what is this actually about? Slowly, the pieces began to click together, and what at first seemed nonsensical turned into something dark, layered, and emotional. By the time I reached the end, I realized just how cleverly it was all constructed. I still wasn’t completely happy with a few parts of the ending, certain things felt unresolved or not quite how I hoped, but it left an impression. This wasn’t a book I liked in a traditional sense, but it was definitely an experience. If you pick it up, go in knowing it’s going to be confusing, strange, and unlike most thrillers you’ve read, but it pays off if you stick with it.

Mystery/thriller that I wanted to love as much as some others. I found it very predictable. I DID LOVE the cat. (was it fantasy, was it in the mans head?) I did feel it was good but I had hoped it would be complicated enough to have me wondering and into it more. I felt the story was very sad. It was good though so try it out you might love it

I sped through this book trying to find out what happened. The main character is complex! And I was thrown for a loop at the twist!

This book shifts POV from chapter to chapter with multiple characters presenting their perspectives on the same events. This has become a somewhat overused technique, but it actually makes semse om this particular story and the author handles it competently. The story opens with the disappearance of a little girl from a nearby lake and since one of the POVs is a young girl, the reader is led to believe that they may be one and the same. Another POV is that of the missing child’s older sister who has continued to search for her younger sibling for years. She has concluded that her sisteer is being kept captive by a young man that the police exonerated early in the investigation and rents the house next door to confirm her suspicions. The author very deliberately points the reader in the same direction. In addition to the shifting POVs of various characters, we also swap timelines; some events are occurring now, others happen during the childhood of the alledged kidnapper, Ted. It’s confusing to keep track of the chain of events. At the book’s conclusion, everything mostly adds up and makes sense, although there were a number of events that did not ultimately have any real relevance to the storyline. It’s frustrating when you are left with unanswered questions. I do not recall exactly where I read that this book was in the horror genre, but I purchased it based on that information. There are no supernatural elements whatsoever. It is more accurately in the psychological thriller category. There are some extremely horrifying elements depicted and sensitive readers could find themselves triggered by the appalling abuse described. All in all, a solid 4 star read. It was a bit confusing to bounce between POVs and timelines and I was not left with that deep sense of satisfaction that comes when at last everything comes together. I find myself still struggling with unanswered questions and dead end plot points. It was definitely not one of those books where everything wraps up neatly in the end! Overall an engaging, well written story worth reading.

Let's just say, I enjoyed this book so much (and the character point-of-view) that I have recommended is to friends and a couple of family members. Enjoyed so much, might I add, that my initial purchase was on my Kindle - and I really wanted a physical copy, so I purchased another! From the beginning I was drawn in - like a curious cat, and my attention stayed undivided for the whole book! Start to finish this book was easy to follow along with and kept me on my toes. The different time settings did not confuse me either. I haven't really read a book with an interesting point of view (I don't want to give spoilers) like this before that it was very enthralling. This was very much like watching a movie unfold, with some graphic moments and unsettling. Parts of the book made me uncomfortable but I was so drawn in, I haaad to stick around to find the outcomes! Wonderfully done, and will definitely re-read.

3.5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️✨ I have mixed feelings about this one. The writing is beautiful and the concept is definitely unique, but it took me a while to figure out what was actually going on. The story felt confusing in parts, like it was trying to juggle too many ideas at once. I didn’t find it as creepy as everyone said it would be, but I appreciated how layered and strange it was. Once things started coming together, it made more sense, but I can’t say it totally landed for me.

The essence of the story is enhanced by the choppy & disconnected narratives of the characters. Overall, a decent thriller/mystery. I don’t know if it was the excessive choppiness or the under elaboration & exploration of characters but it left me feeling a bit underwhelmed.
