They worked right out of box and didn't even need to sit in sunlight very long. The cord is very long before the bee pattern starts so you can have the "receiver" part a good ways away. I didn't need to go far so I just wrapped the cord around the porch post multiple times but you could also just zip tie it in a loop. The different modes are cute. They flash like Christmas lights if you want them too. I prefer just still light. I will probably get another set for other side of porch rails
