Q: What is it this does that a standard dab won't?

If you're asking that I think you need to re-read the description of the device as it's most obviously not comparable with DAB radios - it doesn't do DAB for example. What it does do is received distant FM & AM (LW, MW and SW) stations so that you can hear them and provides filtering and other adjustments so that you can make them much better to listen to, for example, by removing interference from co-channel stations, reducing hiss on weak stations and so on. If you just want a radio for "around the house" this isn't it; this is specifically for pulling in distant, weak and/or tricky signals and making them listenable. The exception would be if you want the sound quality it provides - when you do have a good signal the sound quality is very good for a device of this size - much better than most FM/DAB radios you can buy (but some radios by, for example, Roberts, may better it in that respect at a lower or similar price). If this is what you want it's excellent, if it's not it's probably a waste of your money as you'd be better off with a standard radio.

The radio only covers the LW, MM, SW and FM bands. Check out the specifications on the Amazon page. It is not a satellite receiver, alas.

Hi. The miliamp-hours figure tells you how much energy the battery can hold. The wireless set will only draw what it needs from the battery so a 3400mAh battery will give you a bit longer between charges. If the new battery can physically fit then it should work.. It will take a bit longer to fully charge, though.

Q: Does this radio have the latest firmware?

Mine was shipped with the latest firmware so others probably are too.
