Marvel's Daredevil [DVD]

The man in the mask
Marvel's comic character Daredevil made it to the big screen in 2003 in a film version with Ben Affleck in the lead. This is a tv series for the character. And a completely fresh take on him at that. With no connection to the film version at all.Daredevil is really Matt Murdock. A blind lawyer. Although he can't see, all his other senses are incredibly heightened. And he's had a fair bit of fight training which leaves him very capable of some amazing gymnastics as well.He and best friend and fellow lawyer Foggy Nelson work together in the Hell's Kitchen neighbourhood of New York. Not the nicest of areas, with rival gangs fighting for turf. Where stories are starting to spread of a man in the mask, who fights to help people. But at the same time a man called Wilson Fisk [Vincent D'onfrio] has his own vision of what the place should be. And he will stop at nothing to make that happen...This is set in the same fictional universe as the Marvel comics movies - and for that matter, the show 'Agents of SHIELD'. But this is a corner of the Marvel universe, street level, that the avengers and their ilk don't often see, if at all. So besides from a handful of references and newspaper covers re certain events in the movies, there is no crossover between them. The show is also very dark and violent, not pulling it's punches with the fight scenes. There's also a lot of strong language and occasional adult moments. So this is a 15 certificate dvd and really not suitable for anyone younger than that. There are thirteen episodes to the season. Spread across four discs. As a first season, this is an origin story for the character. But it doesn't focus too much on that to the detriment of anything else, since it does fill the exposition in as it goes along. And this is a different kettle of fish to the movies, because as much as it's a story about a costumed vigilante, it's equally strong as a drama as well. Full of moral dilemmas for the characters. A lot of which get into some interesting religious grounds. And as much gets done via using the law and investigation as beating people up accomplishes.Full of superb acting from the entire cast, with a plot that twists and turns right to the season's end, this is superb and riveting tv. And just the showcase that the character deserves. It's well worth five stars. The dvd has the following language and subtitle options:Languages: English, German, French.Subtitles: English, German, French. There are absolutely no extras.

OH MY GOD, its great!
Great. There,s a lot of violence in it, but despite that, I love the vigilante part and the hero that the man with the mask tries to be.Eventhough fighting the corrupt system is a task thats impossible, he never stops his dream, his war against the wrong doings of evil.I didnt know daredevils stories and history, and I don,t like the real devil so it took a while before watching it on netflix. It ls about the fact that he has a sort of like a devil inside. A force almost stronger than himself and he,s afraid of it but he admits he needs to fight to feel his true identity or part of it. So saying as a christian: it has nothing to do with idolising the devil. This first season is just as good as dexter series one and two. Dark, clever and thrilling.

A HERO TO CARE FOR, A SERIES TO GRAB HOLD
Racketeers beware! Although blinded when nine, Matt Murdock has developed formidable skills - other senses highly acute, he a master of martial arts. Outwardly he is now starting up a humble law practice with his mate Foggy. Secretly at night he is out and about in New York's Hell's Kitchen dedicated to "making life difficult for bad men".There are plenty of those. Even more ruthless than the Russian and Japanese gangsters is Wilson Fisk, his aim complete control of the city and its inhabitants. Already in his pay are innumerable police, judges and a senator. With his bare hands he is prepared to kill - as soon becomes evident. The series is violent, some may feel too much so. It also contains much to applaud. Scripts have insight, acting is strong, characters explored in depth, interesting flashbacks shedding light on how they became what they are. Vincent d'Onofrio delivers a powerhouse performance as Fisk, revelations of his childhood helping create sympathy. Love has now entered his life. Will he become vulnerable, keen to change his ways? Similarly Matt is no one-dimensional creation, he haunted by steps needed to rid the city of evil. (Scenes with his priest are particularly well written.) Charlie Cox makes us care for Matt. We suffer when he does, which is often. Acting generally is strong, there a genuine sense of loss when certain people are no more.Thirteen episodes of around fifty minutes. No bonuses, alas. With so many super-heroes around, fans have become accustomed to those who can fly, race faster than light, work wonders with arrows, swing high across thoroughfares and goodness knows what else. It is all part of the fun. With Matt I confess certain reservations. All works a treat when he stands still in a bustling street. One can sense him absorbing the scents. movements and sounds, in his mind a clear picture growing of all that is going on. What pushes credibility a bit is when he hears the noise of a certain car, promptly bounds up fire escapes, emerges on a roof, bounds from building to building, to arrive some distance away just as that car comes to a halt.Despite such excesses, I became hooked - now one of the fans looking forward to seeing Matt go from strength to strength.

MARVEL + NETFLIX= GOLD
A Must watch tv series 13 Excellent episodes, Marvel Kill it on the big screen, now they are on the small screenThis just shows you don't need CGI or a big star to tell a good superhero story, this tells the story of how Matt Murdock became the Daredevil and his fight against the Kingpin for the battle for the soul of Hell's Kitchen.

In the country of the sighted the blind lawyer rules!
Tough and gritty rendition of a Marvel favourite. Charlie Cox is excellent in the title role and I was glad to see they didn't waste time on the origin story that often plagues and slows down the action on the big movie versions of our costumed do-gooders. Getting season 2 soon.

Grande Serie!
