This is a really well structured study guide. The theoretical content is presented clearly and each section has practical exercises you can work through, generally using the AWS free tier. There are Also helpful Exam style multiple choice review questions at the end of each chapter.One thing to note. At the end of each chapter there is a summary which basically goes over the same material more succinctly. Personally I find this really helpful to reinforce the new knowledge, but I’ve seen reviews of other books showing some people are irritated by this approach.

This is just about enough to pass the exam, combined with perhaps 20 hours of hands-on-experience and 20 hours spent reading white-papers. The numerous mentions of the outdated EC2-Classic product are a bit worrying, I'm pretty sure the exam only covered the current EC2-VPC product. There are lots of questions at the end of each chapter which are useful for testing knowledge. The answers at the back of the book are slightly mis-labelled. The book's main value to me was as a single document that covered nearly everything that I needed to know for the exam.

I'm not planning to get certified at this moment. I have some experience with AWS but I wanted a book that would provide me with some general overview of the services, filling the gaps in my knowledge. So I was a bit worried with some initial reviews mentioning that book seemed an old book full of mentions of deprecated services and old screenshots. The book doesn't have many screenshots. Page 293 with Trusted advisor was the only one I found and it looks recent to me. And yes, it mentions EC2-Classic in the specific EC2 chapter, but probably because it is required for the certification. My overall perception is that it's a book that it's quite updated and it targets the certification very well (again, not certified and not planning).The only caveat I can find is that it doesn't mention (except in a couple of questions) AWS Lambda an AWS API Gateway. My guess is that they don't appear in the exam and hence they are not mention.So excellent book to prepare the certification. And quite a good book to my use case (filling gaps in my knowledge)

Great book! I’ve been using AWS for the past 3 years now and thought it was about time I did some certifications - I used this book along with my practical knowledge in order to pass the Cloud Practitioner exam - now time to start on the real ones :) The book obviously doesn’t quite keep up to date with AWS itself but that’s pretty hard! But it covers off the chapters and at the end gives you some sample questions so you know what type of question to expect. For the Cloud practitioner exam I bought some sample tests off the internet but generally found them to be much harder and different to the ones in the exam.

Likewise - Kindle version seems to mean you get less access to external content.Also - this 1st Edition needs a bit of a polish.There are some review question answers that are just incorrect (or out of date), some of the answers do not match the questions, and whilst corrected later in the book, the numbering/lettering of the review questions/answers is inconsistent (number/number in the questions and number/letter in the answers.)

Good read, great overview of AWS services in a nice form and format. It should be pretty easy to read even if you don't have much prior experience with AWS. One important thing to note: AWS is evolving pretty quickly, and e.g. default settings 6 months ago may be very different from default settings today - hence book may be out of sync with current config options. Stating explicitly to which point in time this book refers to, would definitely help.

Have only just taken delivery so I can't comment on content in any detail.All I can say is that my copy which looks like the one here has 455 pages (not the 500 plus mentioned). Also, many of the of the reviews here complain that only EC2 classic is covered and importantly VPC isn't.The copy I have has a complete chapter on VPC (chapter 4) - 30 pages - and also references VPC in other chapters and questions.The copyright inside is 2017, not the late 2016 in the product details.I can only assume I've got a later edition with some stuff taken out and VPC added. There are no references to an edition however.

Great book to help prepare for the exam.Broken down into sensible grouping of chapters, each with a decent set of questions at the end to test you understanding, and provision of details answers.I found the free access to the Sybex web portal to be particularly useful. It has a wide ranges of test questions related to the Certification , again with comprehensive answersI would recommend this study guide to anyone preparing for the exam - to supplement their learning. How can I not, I passed the exam!

Recomiendo el libro, dado que cubre todos los temas a detalle, pero no lo tomen como unica referencia, dado que algunas cosas han cambiado, pero se puede decir que sirve como tronco comun y de ahi solo te actualizas con los cambios que han ocurrido en AWS despues de la impresion del mismo.

Il y a un résumé des points importants pour chaque fonctionnalité d'amazon AWS.Il y a aussi des tests pour se perfectionner. Je le préfère à la série sur Oracle 10g par Sybex qui était plein d'inepties.Rien à voire, mais je suis en confinement et la France au niveau santé c'est plus ça du tous....

This guidebook provides great descriptions of the Amazon web services and how they work. The book is meant for passing the Associate Exam for Amazon web services, but it also working as a learning resource for AWS. I bought the book just to learn more rather than take the test, and I was pleased with the content of the book.There are quizzes at the end of each chapter which are fairly challenging. You have to read the chapter very carefully to get all the answers correct. Chapters start on basic AWS services such as EC2 and S3, and the book logically progresses to newer more complicated services. The last chapter focuses on best practices.Language in the book is direct and well written. The book does not feel like it has 7 authors as transitions are seamless from chapter to chapter. I learned a good deal about how the services work. The balance was reasonable between text and diagrams of architecture.Overall, I would recommend this book if you are studying for the exam, or if you are just looking to learn more about AWS.

Das Buch "AWS Certified Solutions Architect - Official Study Guide" besteht aus 14 Kapiteln auf 437 Seiten. Jedes Kapitel endet mit einem Fragekatalog zum Üben für die Prüfung. Alle Kapitel haben ca. 30 Seiten.Die 20 seitige Einleitung führt kurz ins Thema AWS ein. Natürlich sind nur die in 2017 vorhandenen Komponenten genannt - damit fehlen die Hypethemen Kubernetes & Docker. Sehr gut haben mir einer der 6 Motivationspunkte für AWS gefallen: "Go Global in Minutes". Genau dies soll AWS leisten.Kapitel 2 führt in Amazon Simple Storage Service (S3) und Amazon Glacier ein. Dabei wird auf die Besonderheiten des Objekt-Speichers eingegangen und was die Unterschiede zu Filesystemen oder Blcokdevices sind (die es auch gibt - ECB bzw. EFS). Stichworte sind hier das Rest-Interface mit seinen Operationen für die Zugriffe auf Buckets und Objekte. Sehr schön ist das Beispiel zum Erstellen einer statischen Webseite. Die Erläuterungen zu Glacier sind leider etwas kurz geraten.Kapitel 3 enthält wohl die bekanntesten Komponenten: Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) und Elastic Block Store (EBS). Im Bereich EC2 werden leider zu sehr Instanztypen (CPU, Memory) behandelt und es fehlen Details zu Betriebssystemen, Remote-Zugriff, etc. EBS ist wieder sehr kurz - gerade Backup/Recovery hätte mit wenigstens einem Beispiel beschrieben werden können.In Kapitel 4 geht es um das Netzwerk (VPC): Für Leser mit Netzwerkkenntnissen ist hier nur die Namenskonvention von Amazon interessant. Was ist ein Elastic Network Interface, etc. Sehr lustig fand ich Sätze wie "A security group is a virtual stateful firewall that [...]." Leider wird der verschlüsselte Zugriff per VPN nur auf einer halben Seite erwähnt.Kapitel 5 beschreibt Elastic Load Balancing, Cloudwatch und Auto Scaling. Die Beschreibung der Load Balancer bietet keinen Mehrwert. Cloudwatch wird beschrieben - aber es fehlen konkrete Konfigurationen und damit bleibt es zu abstrakt. Dagegen wird Auto Scaling mit vielen Zeichnungen und Beispielen beschrieben. Hier hat wohl mitten im Kapitel der Autor gewechselt.Kapitel 6 beschreibt schön die Terminologie für as Identity und Access Management. Gut aber auch nicht wirklich spannend.Das Kapitel 7 behandelt Datenbanken und gehört mit 40 Seiten zu den längeren Kapiteln. Sehr gut werden hier die Vorteile von On-Premise gegen DB auf EC2 und Amazon Datenbanken herausgearbeitet. Leider bleibt im Dunkeln wie eine Skalierung funktioniert - bzw. welche Eingriffe in die Applikationslogik nötig ist.Kapitel 8 behandelt für mich bisher unbekannt AWS Services: Simple Queue Service, Simple Workflow Service, Simple Notification Service. Hier werden Besonderheiten wie Timeouts schön beschrieben. Auch sind gute Grafiken enthalten, die das Verständnis stark vereinfachen.Das DNS und Route 53 werden im achten Kapitel beschrieben. Hier gilt dasselbe wie bei Kapitel 4: Mit Netzwerkkenntnissen ist das nichts Neues.Kapitel 10 beschreibt ElastiCache. Das kürzeste Kapitel mit 5 Seiten. Quasi ohne Inhalt.Im nächsten Kapitel wird in der Einleitung gesagt "understanding these additional service will not only help in your exam preparation, but.." - ja auch der Weltfrieden wird dadurch gesichert ;-) Wenn es schon so anfängt - ein Sammelsurium von diversen Diensten (Elastic MapReduce, Data Pipeline, Kinesis, ...) Alles recht kurz, wird wohl für die Prüfung benötigt.Die Kapitel 12 und 13 behandeln Sicherheit und Compliance. Sehr langweilig und zum Teil mit Rückgriff auf vorangegangene Kapitel. Beinhaltet auch eine Liste der Certifications und Third-Party Attestations, die sich über 5 Seiten zieht (ISO 9001, ISO 27001, SOC1, ...)Das letzte Kapitel ist mit "Architecture Best Practices" betitelt. Hier werden leider nur über 15 Seiten Beispielapplikationen beschrieben im Bezug auf Failover, Elastizität, etc und mit welchen Komponenten das in AWS realisiert werden kann.Mein Gesamteindruck: Ein guter Einstieg, wenn auch z.T. mit fehlender Tiefe. Da es aber als Prüfungsvorbereitung gedacht ist, kein Wunder.

Well written and easy to read book. I recently bought it as a Kindle version and used it to get my certification. By reading all of the chapters, following all of the exercises, and doing the sample test questions, you are well prepared to take the exam!
