Wonderful movie - Japanese language track removed after purchase
This movie is wonderful.I did not want to penalize it for how Amazon has changed it and so I gave it 5 stars, which I feel it deserves. When I bought the movie, it came with the original Japanese language track. I watched it then in the original Japanese and enjoyed it immensely. One can enjoy the original voice actors speaking in the Hiroshima dialect, for example. Some time later, I went to watch it again and found that the track had been removed. Only the English track remains. I'm sure the English language voice actors do a fine job, but it was a surprise that the movie I bought because it had an original voice track no longer has it.

A Lyrical and Elegiac Portrait of the Perseverance of the Human Spirit, a Modern Japanese Masterpiece.
Plain and simple, this is a stunningly beautiful film, visually and emotionally. It’s depiction of WWII-era Japan is so frank and genuine, you can tell they really put in the effort to be as accurate to the time period, locations and customs as possible. The littlest of things most viewers wouldn’t even notice are shown in-detail, such as a girl disposing of her used pencil shavings into a little “trash hole” in the floorboards of her classroom. The war is certainly a factor in the story, but this is not a “war film.” Not even an “anti-war film.” The film’s goal isn’t to make you say “oh wow, America sucks” or "war sure is bad" or any of that (not that it can’t elicit those reactions in inevitable discussions). That's not what the film's interested in focusing on. It’s simply a gentle, personal tale of a woman trying to find her place in the world. The tragedy of war simply helps facilitate that. Similar to A Silent Voice, it’s a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the simple desire we all have to live. It’s corny, but the old adage “love triumphs over adversity” is precisely the theme of the film. Now, does that mean it won't make you cry like a baby? No, it does not. Grab your tissues if you're an emotional mess of a person like I am.Not to mention, lest I forget, the absolutely jaw-dropping art. The film cuts between starkly contrasted images of beauty and tragedy and splices them together in ways that left me speechless with awe. The art is so delicately rendered, it feels like a picturesque painting come to life, while also being so choc-full of detail that the world feels fully lived in, like you’re experiencing the lives of these characters firsthand. The direction on display here is truly commendable (mad props to director Sunao Katabuchi). Honestly, this film rivals Grave of the Fireflies’ impact and power. It easily ranks alongside the other Japanese animated masterpieces of 2016, and if this or A Silent Voice don’t at the very least get a nomination for best animated feature at the next Oscars it’ll be a great disservice. I certainly wouldn’t call this an “Oscar-bait” film, but it should definitely appeal to their sensibilities when choosing more “artsy” stuff for their nominations. Despite winning the Japanese academy award for best animated feature and seeming to be quite a sleeper hit in general, it still feels like not nearly enough people are talking about or watching this film (at least on the western side). It's easily as emotional and powerful as A Silent Voice or Your Name (if not moreso) and it absolutely deserves your time. I’m sorry, I really can’t think of any issues I had with this film. It’s a 10/10

This film will break your heart, you will cry, but you don't want to miss it.
A heartbreaker and insta-classic. "In This Corner of the World" is a historical fiction that follows Suzu, as she enters adulthood during WWII in wartime Japan. Much of the story takes place in Kure, about 10 miles outside of Hiroshima, and the last quarter covers the Bombing of Kure during July 1945, the dropping of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima in August 1945, and the aftermath. This story is similar to "Grave of the Fireflies" in that they are both films that spotlight the horrors of war but have far deeper meanings. The message of Fireflies was about the need for parental figures and support while growing up. Meanwhile Corner is as much a story about the importance of family, daily life during the war, and most importantly overcoming adversity even when things seem at their bleakest."In This Corner of the World" is beautifully animated using an oil-based, colored pencil, and sometimes watercolor aesthetic. The protagonist is also an artist and so the film will deliberately change styles to reflect the way she sees the world. There is one scene, with let's just say a delayed reaction, where the change is so abstract and dramatic that it leaves a lasting impact on the viewer; so much so that I started tearing up just thinking about it. The character design is deceptive. Our heroine is 18 years old when the story kicks in but you'd never know it unless they told you. There are several special features included on the disc that are worth a watch. Translated interviews with the director and producer, a cite tour of Hiroshima and Kure, and trailers. I have watched the film subbed and dubbed; I can confirm the English dub is actually good. We've entered into a new age of anime films. With movies like "Your Name", "A Silent Voice", and "In This Corner of the World"; I am excited to see what the future holds.

Understated Masterpiece
First off, this is not an antiwar movie. The viewer is allowed to arrive at their own conclusions and it is not preachy or dogmatic. Rather it is a glimpse into the lives of ordinary people in that period of time and notwithstanding creative artistic license via the anime format it achieves those themes successfully. Reading other professional reviewers comments on this film one criticism is that the movies flow and pace suffers early on. But I don't believe that is accurate or justified. If you were to adopt the japanese cultural perspective and this movie's target audience is the same, you would understand that the everyday scenarios while not particularly exciting is laying the framework of what ordinary people's lives were like. Japanese people understand that and it may be hard to explain to those who are used to seeing a movie created in the normal manner. There is value in seeing people deal with the day to day issues in circumstances beyond their control and the desire to survive no matter the obstacles. If anything, the movie's understated style allows more of central focus on individual characters and emotions and interpersonal relations. I was not expecting much prior to seeing this anime but it has become a soul satisfying treat.

This movie reminds me of what my late grandparents told me.
I'm a Japanese person. Watching "In This Corner of the World" made me regret my silly behavior that I didn't seriously listen to what my late grandparents told me about their hard life during World War II. But now thanks to this movie, I deeply understand what they meant, and I think now they would forgive me. In addition, it also made me realize that so many people in the world are facing such sufferings even now.Incidentally, there are a great number of "Samurai" movies and TV dramas whose heroes are very famous lords. I got tired of watching these and for a long time, I wanted to see ones whose main theme was about the daily lives of ordinary people in the Edo period (Samurai era) or something similar to that. But I didn't know if there were any movies like that. Maybe not. In the first half of "In This Corner of the World," I felt this was exactly what I had been looking for! (Though not exactly the Edo period)Anyway, I don't want to give away any spoilers. I'd like you to just watch it!

Amazing film!
Amazing story! Very thought provoking and a very sad ending (sad in a good way, but still sad!) a great story of love, love lost, love found and the hardships of both family life in wartime japan and the perils of the age. Beautifully illustrated! It's a cinematographic masterpiece that just has you spell bound from beginning to end! Very very well done, well researched and well presented. Although set against the backdrop of WW2 it's not about the fighting, vits about ordinary home life in the Japanese home islands at the time. Very interesting! Thoroughly recommend it. I loved it so much I got the book straight after and I am so glad I got the book. It is illustrated as well as the film and has just a few more bits of depth to it, such as explanations in the margins of customs and such like makes it an equal visually stunning masterpiece. I love both media! I thoroughly recommend it and the book it's based on!

Wonderful must see movie.
This is a beautiful film. It shows life during war time in Japan, in a small town close to Hiroshima. The war is never far away in the movie. But the movie goes on the way life goes on too.We see the family cope with lack of food, air raids, loss etc. It sounds sad, but it is also an uplifting film. It made me smile at time because of funny things. I cried too. But mostly it had this strong family feel to it. We visited Hiroshima this year, I loved the city. This film. Showed the sad history. But also how strong people are.About the limited release. It is well worth it. Beautiful art cards, a booklet, and beautiful box. Wish more releases were like this.
