The Snowy Day (Picture Puffin Books)

Wonderful wonderful wonderful
Beautiful short story. I wanted a book with a little black boy protagonist, that didn't problematize / fetishize / highlight blackness, as so many of the contemporary books do. I bought this intending for it to be that special book we read during the Christmas period, every year. But my son so loved the book, we were even reading it during the heatwave! Lovely, charming story - a little boy enjoying the snow, his mum and friend make brief appearancs. Lovely simple, sweet images. My son was about 18 months old when I first bought it and he loved it from the first reading. I bought the large board book version which is very nice quality and I imagine this is the type of book one hands down through the generations.

Every child should have this book
To me, this is the ultimate picture book. If you were only to buy one picture book ever for your house, class or library, it would be this one. The story is simple but timeless. The collage illustrations are beautiful. It seems a story just begging to be written and utterly universal, yet at the time (1962), Ezra Jack Keats choosing to use a non-white child to centre his story on was a radical choice, The Snowy Day is widely seen as the first picture book with a black child as its hero. Why? Well, as the author said, “my book would have him there simply because he should have been there all along.”

Gorgeous book
I bought this for my baby nephew to build his book collection, he lives in Singapore and has never seen snow. Shallow creature that i am, i liked the pretty pictures. But this simple book is so much more than it's gorgeous illustrations. Published in 1962, it's "One of the first picture books for young children to portray a realistic, multicultural urban setting." I plan on collecting the rest of Peter's stories.

Lovely story with beautiful pictures
Lovely depiction of a snowy day and a window into a child’s world. Very calming, short and sweet story.

Ok
It is a nice simple story, nothing special. The book does not have rhymes which capture young children more. My one and a half toddler is not very interested in this book yet. But I will keep offering it to him in the future. It is a nice book to have in a child's bookshelf for them to connect with nature, in this case, snow.

very calming
Had heard of this book for many years but had never read it as a child.Im so glad i got this book for my little girl (2 years old). It is very calming to read... much like when everything is still and quiet on a snowy day.I wasnt sure if my little girl would like it as the pictures are quite simple and have blocks of colour, not like lots of today's books that seem to have lots of things going on on every page. But we have read it many times now and talk about the little boy and the snow and the snow suit.
