Measures Your Optical Empowerment, Or Does It? [THREE STARS]
I’ve purchased more than my share of LED lighting products, each of which make claims about how bright they are. I’ve always thought it would be nice to have an instrument to make lighting measurements, so when the FYBOPTWU - Optical Power Meter showed up on Vine, I thought I’d grab one for use in future reviews of LED lighting products. Now I know what you are saying: “This is a product for Fiber Optic Testing.” I get that. But the Web ad copy reads: “FYBOPTWU - Optical Power Meter OPM (FC/SC/ST) & LED Lighting, Fiber Optic Tester Portable Optical Power Meter.” I took that to mean that while it did fiber measurements, it might also make intensity measurements of “LED Lighting.”Well, no. This is a fiber-optic instrument, and a fiber-optic instrument only. The “& LED Lighting” part of the description is, in my opinion, a very poorly-worded way of saying that the gizmo also includes a little white LED that can be used as a flashlight.So... not what I wanted and not what I thought I was getting. But hey, let’s play with it a bit anyway... The instrument appears sturdy on the outside and has a nice feel in the palm of the hand. The monochrome LCD display is fairly large, 2-inches diagonal, easy to read, and can be back-lit.The instrument measures dBm and, if you wish, nW. You can set reference levels for comparative measurements, and apparently you can save measurements as well. Measurements can be corrected for wavelength; you can select one of ten values from 850 to 1650 nm.The instrument does not appear to have some of the features mentioned in the instruction sheet. For example, there is no charging port (even thought you can see mention of it on the instruction sheet in the first photograph of the Amazon posting.) There is no “red light source,” either. While this instrument (according to the instructions) is suppose to have a “detachable RJ45 unit” and the case literally features the green button marked “PRESS” used to release that module, the “PRESS” button is non-functional on my instrument and there is no RJ45 jack anywhere on this device. When I finished playing with the instrument, I attempted to remove the two AAA batteries from the battery compartment prior to storing it. The metal shorting strap sprung out of the battery compartment and went flying. Fortunately, I was able to find it and slide it back into the compartment. But it’s loose and will likely fall out again.Pros-Apparently robust external construction. Nice hand-held design. Easy-to-read LCD with backlight. Measures optical optical power in dBm and nW. Adjustable for sensitivity at several different wavelengths. Build in “flashlight” for dark wire closets.Cons-Instructions in the box don’t appear to match the item that was sent, referencing features that this instrument clearly does not have. The Amazon photo of the device shows a lanyard, my unit did not come with one. Poor choice of web ad copy: “& LED LIGHTING” does not mean the instrument has capability to measure lighting levels,t means that the instrument includes a built-in LED flashlight. Shorting strap fell out of the battery compartment the first time I removed the batteries.

No need for this
I ordered this for the hubby’s toolbox. Hubby let me know there is really no need for this product as he is not a telephone repairman. Most people don’t have land lines anymore due to cellphone usage. That being said product seems like a good quality product. Though we were unable to test due to the fact we don’t have a land line telephone. The product has some great features like using real batteries for portability. No worries about needing a recharge when you can just change the battery. Easy to read interface. And comes with a handy carrying/lanyard strap. Good instructions.
