Talkabout DVD: Social Communication Skills

I haven't gone through this full DVD yet. It is intended for people with Autistic Spectrum Disorder, communication difficulties or learning difficulties. However, I got it so that I could use it in SPHE classes. I thought that it would be a good idea for the children to see the different scenarios so that they could discuss them. I found that some of it was quite stilted because the characters had to demonstrate the scene without background music or other noises that you might have in a normal situation. As well as that some of the body language/voices are exaggerated. I would be using this DVD with children who do not have Learning Difficulties as well as with children who do so for them I would have to tell them in advance that it is quite stilted in order to avoid sniggering.However, I think this DVD would be a good starting point for the children because it plays through the scene but then you can discuss each character's behaviour. As well as that there are examples of good and bad body language. There are examples of different types of intonation, rate, volume, expression, etc.There are also examples of people being assertive and different types of conversations. The accompanying book is very helpful because it gives a synopsis of the different scenarios and gives talking points which can be discussed.I would definitely use this DVD as a starting point in a class but I'd say I would then use scenes from films to reinforce the point in a more natural way so that it would round it off for the children who do not have learning difficulties. I would hope that this would also help the children will difficulties.

Its a brilliant aid to help children or young adults on the ASD spectrum who stuggle to identify peoples emotions, expressions, tone of voice, social interaction. A little difficult for myself to adapt the activities for my child , but the booklet you get with it is helpful , we have only used level 1 so far

Brilliant resource for demonstrating role play, easy to use, clips are not too long so interest is maintained.

Ridiculously small-content CD for a ridiculously high price. Not good value for money.
