I had the pleasure of being the program coordinator during Violet's years as a volunteer in Hells Canyon. She and the many other amazing volunteers who took loving care of the sites throughout the Canyon kept the doors open and are to be commended for their outstanding contributions. The book is wonderful and should be read by all who have experienced the Canyon and those who would like to. Many folks visited Hells Canyon whenever she was volunteering at Kirkwood just to meet Violet and hear her great stories about her life and adventures. She was a pioneer in the true sense of the word and someone very special to have known. -- P. Worle

Five stars isn't enough! As a resident of Kansas for 65 years, I've always found the "mountains" intriguing. I have also always been a fan of pioneer history, "enjoying" the idea of the hardships endured by those hardy souls from the comfort of my easy chair. The vivid descriptions in this book, told with such detail and humor, were entertaining, inspiring, and thought-provoking. The photograph were amazing, each one so full of details to be studied and REstudied. Violet must have been an exceptional lady, so it shouldn't be surprising that her "descendants" would care enough (and be capable enough) to produce this fine book.

It was up both ways to everything!
Growing up in the deepest canyon in North America on horseback. A wonderfully detailed account of family life, way past the end of the road.

True picture of life on the river.
This is a wonderful book about Hell's Canyon. I grew up whitewater rafting, boating, and water sking the rapids. I personally knew Jimmy and Muriel Wilson. This book gives a true picture of life on the river including hard work and delightful times.
