For Popscene Alone
That there have been so many conflicting choices of songs that people are upset at missing from the track listing gives an indication of how strong the back catalogue of Blur is. Personally I'm glad MOR, Country House and On Your Own are ommitted in favour of Trimm Trabb, Battery In Your Leg and Bugman. In particular, one of the singles compilation had (and indeed DIY compilation - home taping is killing music though) is how to follow Song 2. Live Popscene has always been effective, seguing seamlessly through in Punk thrash style (see the Live at Peel Acres as a prime example) but here the follow on of Bugman works supremely well. Noisier, messier and all together weirder (the Space is the Place outro just nudges I got my head shaved by a jumbo jet for non-sequitor lyrical approaches) it is a brilliant choice.Glad also to see Death of a Party on there and of course Popscene at last released in a fully formatted way - it is brilliant and one of those moments that could have been from any point in their career being so related to Song 2, Crazy Beat etc. For that alone its 5 stars.

A fervoured image of another world
If you're a Blur fan already, it won't have escaped your attention that Midlife features - for the first time on LP - the band's great 'lost' single, Popscene. Its inclusion alone goes some way to distinguishing this as a compilation par excellence, and another is the extremely judicious selection of non-single cuts, meaning the likes of Blue Jeans, Badhead, He Thought Of Cars and Trimm Trabb nestle alongside most of the usual suspects - Girls And Boys, Parklife, Song 2, Tender et al.13 may be their strongest LP overall, and Parklife may show the band at the peak of their powers, but as an introduction to the magical world of Blur, or as confirmation of what heights they were capable of hitting, Midlife ticks all the right boxes.

Midlife-Blur Review
These songs were great when they were first released, but seem even better now after a long time without listening to them. A great album for a nostalgic moment.

Hopefully a beginning to something new
For some guys, blur started (and probably ended) with "woo-hoo" (for your reference the title is Song 2) the song that made them famous in more places than they were before, and gave access to mainstream radios that are reluctant to air anything longer than 3 minutes unless it's paid programming.blur showed their talent early with "Sing" that later on made the soundtrack for a cult movie, you might remember - Trainspotting. Luckily this important milestone is included in the compilation, showing the potential of the band capable of doing more than its -somemetimes embarrasing - early releases, like the video for There's no other way (check their Starshaped dvd for the original version of the sinking crew)While for others in the britpop scene electronica has been a fine flavour added to the guitar riffs, blur was not afraid to build songs on "processed beats", and release songs for their loyal fans that some of others would have thought to be out of scope for them.My personal favourite is Beetlebum, the opening track, perhaps the most beautiful way to say "I love you", and unfortunately one of the most emotionally frustrating moment I've ever heard recorded. On the other hand, Parklife, one of their best is joyful and colourful, you just want to jump up and down as you hear it...All in all... a best buy for those who want to dive in deeper....
