Newport Cottages 1835-1890: The Summer Villas Before the Vanderbilt Era

Oh my goodness I just received this book and I haven't even had an opportunity to thoroughly read it all. There is a lot here, it might take me a month or more to finish it!So far, it is absolutely spectacular. Incredibly detailed. Floorplans everywhere. Beautiful color and also some black/white photos, excellent writing and history, so well organized.If I was a professor and this was somebody's doctorate thesis, they would get an A+++++.Just buy it. You will be very happy you did.

I'm thrilled to be able to add the latest book by Mr. Kathrens to my collection. Once again, his treatment of the subject doesn't disappoint. The houses, as well as owners/inhabitants, are described succinctly and sometimes humorously, with trivial tidbits thrown in. There are historical and, if available, modern photographs of the properties. I would have liked more blueprints (as has been done in some of his other books), but this is from a personal love of exploring old architectural drawings.

Mr. Kathrens' "Newport Cottages" book is a wonderful prequel and companion guide to his earlier (Gilded Age era) "Newport Villas" book. Each of the homes in "Newport Cottages" has been well researched and Kathren's writing style is both informative and engaging. Both the old and contemporary photos that accompany each of the homes is outstanding, and the floor plans are a wonderful reference too. Speaking as an aficionado of all things Newport, this was an outstanding addition to my knowledge and for my personal library!

This is the perfect book for those who are fascinated by the opulent mansions of the Gilded Age.The photography is beautiful and the architectural descriptions of the mansions answered all myquestions. It is the perfect coffee table book, but don't leave it on the table. Read it !

A detailed look at several of the lesser known privately owned mansions of Newport. If you have driven around wishing you could see inside the mansions that are not open to the public you will love this book! Fascinating stories about the owners also. Great book.

I received this lovely book as a gift. I very much enjoyed reading the descriptively well written stories of the owners of these grand mansions. The photography is very well done and gives views and perspectives that are distinctive from most architectural photography.
