Great lighting system, but need a dealer to get full benefit
If you're already a Lutron dealer then you know what you need to do, but I'm guessing someone reading this may have heard about radio-ra or has an existing system and thinking about expanding. If that's the case, then you can probably buy this and have someone else install it, but this really is not for consumers per se.Lutron has 2 lineups of their home automation systems, Homeworks QS, and Radio Ra 2. The Original Radio-ra was a consumer product in that you didn't need any special software to program them. You'd go to a keypad, hold a few buttons to get them in the right mode, then walk around and set your dimmers. The problem was that it was too limited as far as programming options and for larger systems, (32 was max with single system which could be bridged to 64 with much more problems) it could be an absolute nightmare.Because of that, and the fact that people wanted to use apps, Radio-Ra 2 came out and it's programmed via software that only dealers can have after training. This actually a GOOD thing, trust me. There are many best practices that should be applied when programming these so while it's not impossible for a consumer to learn these, there are many pitfalls so rather than having angry customers saying "I can't get this to work, it must be a bad product!", it was decided that it's best to train dealers to make sure everybody has a good experience. Why?Even before you buy the system, the system has to fit your needs. What types of lighting loads will you use? This particular dimmer, the 6D, only works with incandescent and magnetic low voltage lights for instance. Do you have LED lights? You'll need a dimmer with a neutral. It's not simply buying some stuff and expecting it to work. Some of these products also have non-standard electrical installation needs - for multi-locations for instance so your electrician needs to be smarter than the average electrician too.The good news is once everything is installed and running, you the consumer can adjust scenes using the app. It's a nice balance of power and not being able to mess things up. You can still program these things manually but then you won't have the programming options nor the ability to use the app. Don't do that.
