This book deals with principles and characteristics of the wide range of motor types likely to be useful in small engineering workshop applications. It also covers matters such as speed control, electric braking, generators, installation and safety aspects - everything, in fact, of practical value to the small workshop user. In the years since the publication of the first edition, the book has become a well-established reference source for users to dip into when more information is needed on how motors behave both in standard usage and also in less common applications. In this time a lot has happened in the field of motor design. This second edition now contains updated information covering both these later developments in motor types and their control systems. A major section is devoted to the characteristics and installation of Variable Frequency Drive units (VFDs). It also covers the operating differences between North American and European power systems. Review: Easy to follow - An excellent and informative book, or as my old boss used to say " the dogs bollocks " Review: Basics are essential - It is a fact of life that many an experienced electrician can forget the basics, especially when it comes to working mathematical theory and the like. Whilst this isn't an advanced book for those that like to indulge in the mysteries of physics, it is suffice to get one out of trouble, or help him brush up on forgotten basics. For those who ignore the basics, life can become very difficult, especially when in the field with nobody to turn to. I found this book useful enough to keep on the shelf and within arm's reach.

Good all round information
Bought as a gift for someone who knows his motors. Still has interest for an expert, and essential information for the lesser player.

Maybe just a little dated?
The good bits: the author writes with authority on a subject that he clearly knows well. The book seems well organised and is generally written and illustrated clearly. The not-so-good: the book is a little bit limited in its scope, with all the example being small motors. You won't find the kind of motor used in the Tesla for example. I'd have liked to have seen a bit more on brushless DC motors. Also (a minor carp) some of the photographs were a bit dark and a bit small. Whether you find the book useful probably depends on what you are looking for and what else you have read. If you run a small machine shop, I guess it would be ideal. I'm glad I read it but I probably won't read it twice.

A comprehensive guide
This is a most useful guide to the selection of motors for the model engineer workshops and how to use them
