Install is easy but time consuming.
If you follow the so-so directions, this product is easy to install. It is easy, but time consuming. I got the front and rear, and while the instructions for the front were included, no instructions for the rear camera. So I just routed it underneath the door sill and drilled a hole in the plastic on the rear hatch.Overall, I am happy with the quality of the video and the appearance of the camera.

Overall a good solution
On the plus side:- Unobtrusive and out of sight for both occupants and people outside- Always there, always on, always works- Video quality is ok/averageOn the not so plus side, a longer list, but most are minor things:- Installation is a bear on the 2024 ID.4, not so much because of the removal of the small cover, which I had done before for HomeLink mirror upgrade, but because it is difficult to fit all the wires under it when putting it back together. I did not get the small cover back on 100% but left it alone because I did not want to break anything.- The Android app is really bad and setup is cumbersome, mostly because the phone wants to connect to the car immediately after detecting no internet connection from the camera wifi. Best to unpair your phone from the car while you do this.- On sunny days, the reflection from the dash is pretty prominent in the video image.

Camera is okay, but the install can damage your car, cause error codes and/or blow fuses
The installation video for this thing is false advertising. It is incredibly difficult to A) pull off the cover above the mirror and B) pull the wire that the camera goes into. All steps feel like you're going to break something. The process damaged some of the plastic cover above my mirror and I'm lucky I didn't crimp any wires. You also have to sit in the passenger seat with your key fob in another room for the whole install because the ID4 will supply power if it detects you in the driver seat. Only problem is, even in the passenger seat the car still supplies power to the lights and screen. The only way to completely turn off the car is to lock the car with the passenger door open, leave your keys in another room, and then close the passenger door as you enter the car. Only problem is that you're screwed if you need to open the door to grab a tool or any reason during the install. After installing mine, the camera and app is fine. But now I have a Road Sign Display and Front Assist warning that won't go away. I'm guessing it could've blown a fuse. Look at threads online and you'll see other people complaining about error codes and blown fuses. I'm not even sure if I should take it to the dealership now because I'm worried this thing voids the warranty with how sketchy it is to install.Get a normal dashcam. This thing looks cool but it's not worth damaging your car or its electronics over.

OEM style dash cam as advertised for VW ID.4
The dash cam does look exactly as advertised after installation. Perfect fit. No trimming was done. It looks like professional installation. Perfect camera angle without adjustment, although I do not think that you can as it is a fixed camera. The video quality is good during the day and night with only the timestamp. No speed on the recording. The dash cam does record sound. The app is not the best but it does work. Turn off both data and Bluetooth. Leaving only the WiFi on to connect to the dash cam. 2K video of 3 minute loop recording is about 440mb to download to your phone.Note to ID4 owners: it's the smaller connector, which is kinda deep inside. The unlock latch is underneath the connector. Use a small minus screwdriver to push the unlock latch upward as you pull the connector out. It took a long time to figure it out because it was difficult to see anything in such a tiny cramped area. Installation is simple after that.

Good OEM look, but difficult to install
Now that I’m done with the difficult install, I do like the look and operation of this dash cam. Before I go into the install frustrations I experienced, I should let you know that I’m not, by any means, an experienced disassembler of OEM equipment in my cars. But the video provided make it look easy, so I figured I’d give it a try.The original housing was way more difficult to take apart than the video showed. But, after much wrangling (not to mention fear of breaking those parts), I was able to remove the housing. Then the fun of unplugging the existing power cable. That was nearly impossible. I was finally able to pull the original plug out after applying extraordinary force. (If there are any hints from the dash cam manufacturer, I wish that they would offer them. It seemed as if an unseen clip was holding it in, but there is zero guidance.). Then after plugging the power plug into the new cam, there was zero reference as to what to do with the other end of the cable. I made an assumption that it should go into the same plug that I had just taken the original from, but there was no guidance whatsoever provided in the ID.4 install video. I did see that this end was shown to be plugged back in to the original spot in videos for other models, so I went on faith that this was the right thing to do.Finally, slipping the final cover back onto the new camera frame was a bear. My advice would be to test the camera throughly before putting the final cover back on. I didn’t. When I thought that it wasn’t working initially, I tried to open up that plate again to get at the wiring, but there was no way it was going to disconnect from the frame. For me, it turned out that it was working properly, and all was good. It’s been working great ever since. To summarize, if you’re not experienced with taking OEM components apart in your car, I’d recommend that you engage a professional installer. It may cost you a bit, but you’ll save in contributions to your “swear” jar. I like the cam and how it looks, but I’ll never be taking it out any time soon. I’ll enjoy looking at this experience in the rear view mirror.
