Assyrian Palace Sculptures

Excellent photos
This is a beautifully produced book with lots of large coloured photos of the Assyrian palace sculptures and wall reliefs to be seen in the British Museum in London. I find that these excellent photos show off the sculptures in lively detail, almost as good as the real thing. In some ways even better, because it focuses one's attention. I was only a little surprised that the famous mighty winged bulls or sphinxes were not included. This is a book for anyone interested in the history of the Assyrians and their art.

A stunning achievement.
Assyrian Palace Sculptures by Paul Collins is a stunningly beautiful book which contains photos of the British Museums collection taken by Lisa Baylis and Sandra Marshall who have done a brilliant job bringing these wall sculptures to life. The main attraction of such a book is the photographs which are as crisp and clear as anyone could hope for. They are organised in order of Assyrian king reign, divided up with a page or two of brief history of the king and the palace they adorned. It is a very brief description which could have been bulked but the books main job is a antiquity catalogue not a history book. However the introduction which is about 18 pages is more than enough on light history of the Assyrians and how the sculptures came to the British Museum. There is not much more that I can say about this book apart from that it should be read and viewed by at minimum those who are interested in Mesopotamia. This book is a grand achievement, all involved should be immensely proud.

Simply a great book to see all the little details which escape one when standing in front of it, the British Museum, dos not give an awful lot of information

A SIX star book
I have always loved the Assyrian corner at the British Museum and could not have wished for a book to do better justice to it. The photographs are superb and bring out details that I've never noticed before - now I just need to do the 400 mile round trip to see them in the flesh (stone) again!

wonderful pictures
Having often visited the British Museum and seen these sculptures we developed an interest in the history of this region. The photographs of the sculptures in this book are of very high quality and I would happily recommend this book to anyone who cannot get to the BM to see the originals.
