SmartCat Performance Review
I purchased the "SmartCat Kitty's Garden" original and an extra refill. The product performs as advertised, producing grass my cat loved and voraciously consumed. This is a good product; however the growing space is limited to 4 small pockets and the grass does not last very long due to the root system becoming "root-bound"; thereby choking any chance of long-term growth. Because of this fact, I decided to order Cat-Grass, Sweet Oats and other seeds in "bulk" and plant them myself...so as to have plenty and sustained growth over a longer period of time.HOW TO: (1.)Select a receptacle, which has good drainage, and is about 3 to 4 inches deep. A square shape is best so that your cat can't tip it over or push it. (2.)Fill the receptacle with dirt or peat mixture. (3.) Spread and plant the new seeds about 1/8 to 1/4 inch deep ... making certain that every seed is covered with dirt. "Lightly pack the dirt" ... don't press hard... allow the shoots access to grow. (4.)Water... (not soak)... and cover the container with a clear plastic...(like a big Baggie or Dry Cleaner's plastic bag). (5.)Be sure to use a "fork" to poke about 30 to 40 small vent holes in and round the plastic. This creates a "Hot House" effect and prevents mold. (6.)Place container where it will receive good, strong sun-light during the day and not freeze at night. In about 5 to 7 days you should experience growth.Let your Cat have at the grass when it reaches about 3 inches in length. I lightly spray with water and re-cover the grass with plastic every other day or so to stimulate growth and peak my cat's interest. When grass no longer grows... and this will vary according to your planting and care methods... simply use new soil and replant the grass by following the above instructions. The good thing about buying in "bulk" is that you can experiment with different growing methods and not lose money while doing so...Good Luck!!Good "Bulk" buys Amazon.Com are: Catgrass (Sweet Oats for Cats) 1,000 Seeds Bulk and: Ferry-Morse 1985 Organic Catgrass Seeds, Monida Oats (16.5 Gram Packet)

You get enough seeds to refill this thing twice
I use these refill kits to refill my planter multiple times. They give you enough seeds that you always have left-over seeds, which I save. I end up with a drawer of half-filled seed bags. I also save the planters after the grass dies, which I clean and sanitize with bleach. Then I add my own compressed coconut fiber potting mix (which I buy a brick of super-cheap and just chip pieces off of with a flathead screwdriver) and use the left-over seeds to refill periodically for free. They are very generous with the amount of seeds in these kits.

Moldy
Last two I bought have been moldy. I live in a desert climate, and this time I barely added enough water. I made sure of it. Didn't add water, went back to check a few days later and it was moldy. This used to be a good product. Not sure what happened? But until the company can fix the issue think carefully before you buy.

Fraud, every word a lie
When I first tried this product, I loved it. It have my cats a lovely variety of plants to eat, as it said on the wooden box. But when I bought it recently, I noticed that the seeds were all the same, not the selection of four advertised. It even came all in one bag. They looked identical to the cat grass I purchased at the same time. And when it grew, wouldn't you know it, but it was plain old cat grassNo oats, barley, etc. Just cat grass. It is against the law to lie to customers and they need to rebrand or get off Amazon. This is fraud.

Infested with fruit fly larvae.
Adding together water and the peat soil discs isn't hard once you have done it a few times. Remember to remove the wrappings from the discs, crumble them and place them in the wells. But 1-2 days after you add the water, dozens if not scores of fruit flies will hatch and be all around your home. It doesn't say where these are made but the manufacturer needs to do something about this infestation!

My cats enjoy this grass a lot
My cats enjoy this grass a lot. I'm marking it down a star though because the instructions aren't very good. First off, they tell you to put in WAY too much water. I've found that a total of about 5 oz is plenty. Then just mist the grass every day or so to keep it from drying out. Second, they instructions don't mention that you should keep the seeds separated by type. I discovered that when the seed types are mixed in the four chambers, you don't get nearly as good growth. I think that this is because some types grow a little faster than others, and so crowd out the slower growing ones. The grass only lasts for a couple weeks at the most, but one of my kitties likes this almost as much as she likes treats (despite not having any issue with hairballs or digestion), so I like to have it.

Inconsistent
I’ve ordered these in the past and each different type of seed was in its own little separate part of the packet. But this one I got looked normal except the seeds were all thrown together in one bag. It must have been a previously returned item? But there was way too many seeds because I tried to just divide them evenly and they grew too much that that roots were coming out and it became unusable.

SmartCat Kitty's Garden refill. The seeds are moldy.
SmartCat Kitty's Garden refill.Of the two refills I ordered only one was sent. When I removed the covering, I discovered that the seeds were moldy, please see my photo. To be fair to amazon.com, I sent a message, and a refund was promptly deposited back to my account. When I purchased the complete SmartCat Kitty's Garden kit the seeds were fine and grew well.
