Good story
I bought this dvd for myself for two reasons. Firstly I enjoyed the series. Secondly because it was made in the village where I spent my first 21 years and family still live

SO EVOCATIVELY A REMINDER OF CHALLENGING TIMES
Movingly presented here is the impact of war on Cheshire's tiny village of Great Paxford. What now for its vicar, doctor, farmer, teacher, butcher and other families? All are to have their lives changed forever.Focus is mainly on the Woman's Institute, posh President Mrs Joyce Conway to be nudged aside by Mrs. Frances Barden. Arguably the village's two most formidable personalities are forever to battle for supremacy, Frances advocating less talk, more action - members dedicated to doing more for the war effort, jam just the start. There are many characters to warm to as all try to adjust to new challenges. How easy to feel for them as sons set off for war - ever afterwards the fear of a knock on the door and THE telegram. Only one person really to loathe - control freak wife-beater Bob, long suffering Pat overdue for some happiness.Yes, here are people to care for, I surprised just how much I did. So much is so moving - a reminder of no matter how humble, "ordinary" people in tiny communities all had a part to play.

Very enjoyable viewing
Good value for enjoyable viewing. I missed this first series on ITV and wanted to catch u p before viewing the current second series. In fact, it was such a pleasure to view the entire set without commercial breaks that I've waited for the second series until the DVBD is available. For oldies like me, who were children during WW2 but old enough to recall much of what was happening, this series is a nostalgic visit to days past. The sets, costumes, even the external shots (often a weakness in dramas of this period) are spot on. The script is excellent and paints a very good picture of what life was like for the women at home, struggling to cope with rationing, children, even unpleasant husbands. Brings it home, too, how women were vilified who were deemed to have stepped "outside the pale" of legitimate relationships. It could well be viewed by today's youngsters as part of their education in social as well as political history.

Looking forward to having more of this
This series is a real must see for all age categories. Seeing it should be compulsory for the youngest ones who often seem to have quite confused, dimmed and wrong notion of historical events that had such strong and devastating effect on mankind. One of its most positive features is the way it combines all properties of a good story with historical facts. It is highly enjoyable, informative, contains suspense and reflects issues which were topical then and which resonate in society even today. What I appreciate most about the series is the point of view – the emphasis being put on the struggles of civilians, more particularly women – left behind to face all the hardships on their own. The frontline may be relatively far but the war is present everywhere, in every single aspect of their everyday lives. Some plot-lines may be quite predictable (Jack’s death, the sinking of the ship…) but generally I find this series highly recommendable.

Quality nostalgic drama
I loved this series. It is largely well acted apart from one character Teresa who did not appear that authentic but the sub plot between the two characters Pat, the abused wife and Bob, the domineering cruel husband was especially well played. It effectively captured the atmosphere of the second world war. There was a reference to Pat reading the book Mrs Miniver and in many ways, this drama echoes the plot of this old movie - a small country village struggling with the effects of war and pulling together courageously. The focus is on the female characters in this drama and centered around the women's council and the contribution these women made to the war effort. I won't give the ending away but it is such a shame they are not making another series.

Fabulous series
I'm completely hooked on Home Fires - I'm now reading the books that the screen writer wrote, to continue the story on in the series, after the series was pulled after the second series. Frankly, I find the books hard to put down, in the same vein as I had to binge watch the DVD, as I couldn't wait to see what happened next. Love Home Fires - there is a Facebook page for them too, with all the latest news, including the eagerly awaited third book in the series.

Att det bara är två säsonger, tyvärr. Sista avsnittet avslutas med alltför många frågor.
Att visa hur andra världskriget påverkade människorna i en liten by på landsbygden, the Home Front. Trovärdig och spännande.

Un village anglais
Excellent! Des acteurs aux visages familiers- vus dans d'autres feuilletons- qui incarnent parfaitement les habitants d'un petit village bouleversé par le départ des hommes vers le front, les restrictions, les alertes... Dés le second épisode on est "accro"...
