I have a wired network that I want this to connect to and give WiFi access. 
How good a range does this have and what is its signal reliability

Range on this is really good. I have one on the top floor of a 3 floor house and have a strong signal downstairs. Range will always vary by house construction and background noise in the area but I have never had a problem with them.

Can this be set up with different SSIDs that are active at different times? E.g., 1 SSID that only works during set hours & 1 that's active 24hrs

Sorry I misinterpreted your initial question. Perhaps speak to BT, typically switching on WLAN via the settings should normally work. I am bit confused since you also have a Cisco AP. Try plugging it into your BT home hub via Ethernet. Then you can access the configuration on the Cisco AP. However if this is the first time you are using the Cisco AP, you will need to configure your laptop to static IP address such as 192.168.1.244. Then connect cable between AP and laptop. Then you can access the AP with the details below. And then you can change the IP address of the AP to something local on your network. For instance, if your IP address on your home machine is 10.10.10.2,  try setting your AP to 10.10.10.4. You might want to ping the IP address to ensure it it definitely not in use first. Can these perform automatic handover between identical devices?

Yes is the short answer. I chose this particular Wi-Fi AP (Access Point) for that particular reason having jsut rolled out Wi-Fi in my hotel (400+ year old buildings are not easy to install Wi-Fi). Stating the obvious re DHCP and correct SSID these devices are the best on the market, in my personal opinion.
