Huge gap in the story
This is a bit of a whirlwind. It introduces the character with a miniseries then skips the entirety of "knightfall" before beginning his solo series. But skipping the whole "being batman" phase is really weird and doesn't work as a graphic novel. It should arguably be split in two. The artwork is strong, quesada steals the show but kitson does a decent job too. I preferred the pre batman story

Introducing Azrael into the Batfold, A key point in the lead up to Batman: Knightfall. The story introduces us to Jean Paul Valley who unbeknown to him has been programmed from Birth to become Azrael the avenging angel, which is basically a hit-man for the Order of St Dumas cult. When Jeans father dies while on a mission as Azrael the mantle is passed, and its up to the new Azrael to finish the originals mission. All fine and dandy you may think, but of all the cities to occur in, this is Gotham, which means Batman involves himself.Batman is rather unimportant in this story acting as a third wheel and not really achieving anything, He then spends half the story captured and incapacitated. This aside the story in itself is actually pretty bland and boring, Azrael looks cool but the main villain is an unconvincing fat guy with a gun and shouldn't really present a challenge to anyone let alone two highly trained vigilantes. it serves as an acceptable introduction to Azrael which is then explored further during the Knightfall saga.An overall average but still entertaining book which serves its purpose best at letting the readers get a bit of background knowledge of Azrael before he is featured heavily in Knightfall.
